Single fan on GPU going out?

Thread Starter
So on my second rig (the one i passed down to my fiance) I have an Nvidia GTX 560Ti, and i've recently realized the PC was making an odd sound, so i opened it up to check it out and it looks like one of the fans on the GPU will stop spinning, and then start up again for about 2 seconds and stop again (the other fan on the heatsink seems perfect still.)

So i guess my question is, do you guys think it's just a hs/fan problem or could it be a deeper problem, like possibly my power supply not supplying enough power? I thought it could be that, except i would expect both fans to be running on low power in that case.

Any and all feedback is much appreciated!

Thank you thumb.gif

I doubt that it would be a power issue. However, if you want to rule that out, since it is your second rig I would pull the PSU out of your primary rig and use it to test in this system.

If I had to guess, it won't be the PSU but you can never be too sure. I would also try to clean out any and all dust from the card and spin the fan with your finger. If it feels rough/bumpy/different from the working one then I would try to lube it up somehow (not sure about how to do that though).

Otherwise it may just be the fan is going bad. If that is the case then you have a few options:
  • buy a new fan to replace it (not sure where or how though)
  • buy an aftermarket heatsink
  • unplug the fan or do something else to make it stop spinning
  • buy a new gpu and pass your current one down (good excuse for an upgrade thumb.gif)
