XFX 7870 Temperatures

Hi I was looking to overclock my 7870 but after running the GPU Stress test on the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility on stock settings, the card goes up to 85-90C easily. Idle temperatures are around 35. Is the temperature too high when its on full load?

Generally speaking, prolonged exposure to temperatures in the 80's - 90's have been shown to cause degradation to the life span of the card. I don't think it would be worth overclocking anyways considering that you are getting those temperatures. The card will start to throttle at those temps; negating any performance increases you might have gained from the overclock. The thermal shutdown for the 7870 is right around 105 C, but it would start to reduce its clock speed earlier than that. I think it would be "fine" ("fine" varies from person to person) to have these temperatures during a benchmark where it's only for a short time, but any long term usage at those temps would be detrimental.

That being said, you got those temperatures on an extreme benchmark which isn't exactly related to a real world gaming load. What kind of temperatures do you get under a heavy gaming load?

60-70 seems perfectly normal. If you applied a small overclock that made the card max at about 80 you should be good to go biggrin.gif
