Broke black wire connector to wireless NIC in laptop

Thread Starter
What does the black wire do?

I'm still able to connect to 2.4 and 5ghz wireless networks and pull pages. What purpose does this wire serve? Is it grounding?

If you mean one of the two wires connected to the wireless card (Black/Red or White) then you are down to one antenna which means lower speed and less range

As Aswan said, you've broken one of the antenna cables, and will get less range/speed. It is actually a mini coaxial cable, you will see it has an outer and centre core. You can buy replacement aerials though, I've seen them on eBay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.H1.Xlaptop+wireless+aerial&_nkw=laptop+wireless+aerial&_sacat=0&_from=R40

just add your make/model to the search, and you can find one to suit your laptop. Most times it means dismantling the screen bezel though, as the aerials are usually placed either side at the top of the screen, with the cables routed down by a hinge and down to the mainboard/wireless card.

The previous posters are correct. You're limited to single stream wireless at this point. Somewhat like an iPad or other mobile device. You also miss out of any sort of TxBf if it's .11AC capable and you're less resistant to interference.

2x2:2 devices are really a huge upgrade from 1x1:1. 3x3:3 isn't really that big of a jump from 2x2:2.
