Like I said, I am advocating for a dual option Windows, and my personal preference is Metro, I am okay with the new commands and protocols. I find it vastly more visually appealing as opposed to the jumbled mess that was the Start Menu.

What are you referring to hidden stuff? I am talking about hiding the shut down option, control panel, user accounts, documents, search, my computer, etc. which you use to find with the click of a single button or windows key press as opposed to hunting it down in metro.

You know on the desktop implemented in 8.1 you can right click on the start button and it gives you access to most of what you look for: shut down, control panel etc.

I tried 8 once when I got a cheap upgrade offer. It was on my laptop and I didn't like it so went back to 7. Last summer I then build a desktop and decided to put 8 on it and forced my self to learn how to use it. Got the 8.1 upgrade on both desktop and laptop and by now windows 7 seems old and sluggish when I use it in comparison. After getting used to 8/8.1 it is so much faster and efficient than the start menu imo. I for one fear what this "going back to 7" idea for Windows 9 is.

Many has said "Please don't screw this up" and I agree - but the "Screwing up" part is probably defined quite different from person to person.

I agree, I'm a huge fan of the way Win 7 looks. Aero makes it so sleek looking.

Shut down option is literally not hidden, there is a giant power button in Metro on the top right hand corner. Right click on the Start button you get the majority of what you just listed in a single click. There is also the File Explorer button on the taskbar to reach everything in about the same number of "clicks". Any of the more obscure settings you listed can be pinned to the Metro in the form of a link to PC settings.

Almost all of the things you listed I access in a click by using the File Explorer button which has no bearing on Metro staying intact. Insofar as the jumbled mess, I used Start to gain access to Programs that I used, and Metro makes it easier to access subprograms in those programs. I don't like having to click my way through to gain access there, so no, Start Menu isn't a one click panacea. Look at that, different preferences for different uses.

It's like I stabbed a puppy by supporting the existence of Metro. I like the design aesthetic, its modern and clean and liking the old W7 version isn't more "professional".

EDIT: My point is Microsoft shouldn't go for the two steps forward, one step back idea, regardless of where people feel that foot forward went. They gambled, tried something new, and in my opinion it worked. However, the user base wants start, so give them start, just not at the expense of the advances made thus far. Amalgamate, not rewrite history.

I loved windows 8/8.1 Never used the start screen but the performance and optimization of the OS was incredible.

Ewwwwwww stylized menus are tacky, ugly and old...we want clean vector interfaces now...that's the future...

Get your weird bubble glass themed shiny fish tank task bar outta here...thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Why distract the user with stylization...it should be as minimalistic and functional as possible...not a hello kitty island themed mess.
!!!!!

I always turned off areo and windows xp desktop to get back to that minimalistic feel of functionality, cleanness and focus...

If win 7 had a proper implementation of Uefi id still be on it but it sees my ssds as legacy drives wont see them no matter what uefi tricks I try. On win 8.1 it auto installs in uefi mode no drivers dos disks needed.

windows 8.1 is so easy to use. windows key shortcuts is painless. the new search is a breeze. I love the new task manager. its a very fast and it is more anti virus than windows 7. ill never use 7 on my pcs ever again.

I don't care about metro apps, but apart from that I'm pretty happy with the Win8 interface, I think it looks and feels smoother than 7 with aero, also 8 seems to handle updates and the boot process a lot better, it just feels faster (I have 2 PCs with 8 and 2 with 7, 3 of them with very comparable hardware)

forcing metro like they did was clearly a bad move, because of the reaction some people had (and the fact that Windows RT failed, so the unified UI makes less sense), for me it didn't change anything because I hardly ever used the start menu anyway... and the start screen (specially with 8.1) works as well as the start menu of 7 for winkey + search + enter I guess.

I think transforming the start screen in something more like the start menu is OK, it's not going to change anything for me, you can still run metro apps if you are one of the people who do that, and you will not get your entire screen covered wen you press winkey if you are offended by that... oh yes, and the expected update with metro apps running in a window is also going to make them more usable, so it's all good, windows 8 is a solid OS, tweak the UI a little to make people happy and keep the evolution "under the hood" like they are doing since Vista and it should be a great OS like 8 is, but more popular like 7 was.
