IN WIN 901 Case Owners Thread - Page 32

Pretty well finished my 901 build.
I had to make a few changes. Smaller PSU to make cable management possible, smaller GPU to make air movement possible, and a pull fan at the back, which I hate having stuff outside, Oh well. It's let me get back to the overclock potential of this chip (i7 5960x at 4.7Ghz and 1.33 volts).

It's been a challenge fitting something so powerful into something so small.
My idle temps are in the late 40s and under full load up to the late 70s. It's pulling nearly 400 watts though = a lot to get rid of, plus it's mid summer here and stinking hot.
I think short of having an external rad I've reached the power potential of this case.
Although I did run a xeon 2690 in it last week and it was about the same on benchmarks but way cooler. It's 12 core and pulls about 1/2 the wattage as the i7 under load.

Possibly that's the way to go with small builds...

Would you guys recommend the Noctua NF-B9-1600 92mm fan or Be Quiet BQT T9225-MR-2 fan for exhaust. Would appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks

I personally am a big fan of Noctua. But, either one will make a huge difference as opposed to not having a 92mm exhaust. So which ever you'd prefer.

Finished my build.

The problem I ran into was that the CPU heatsink was huge and this was the only way I could mount it on the mobo. Even like this the heatsink is blocking 1 ram slot and I now have no expandability.

The best way to mount it would be with the heatpipes facing left instead of right, but there's a heatshield(?) (the red/black part next to the i/o) obstructing the heatpipes.

I noticed there are screws on the back of the mobo, so potentially I could remove it. Any ideas whether I could remove/cut/replace it?

I have that same motherboard and those heatsinks cool the power delivery and get quite hot. I would advise against removing them, but if you can find a lower profile replacement it could work. Or alternatively, change the cooler, I have the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 rev b and its cheaper, low profile and doesnt block any RAM slots. And is quiet, especially with a Noctua fan.

Well yeah, I guess i gotta change the CPU heatsink someday, when 8gb ram won't be enough or just swap it with a 16gb one. Thanks for the help!

Yes, removing the heatsink for that, or cutting it, would definitely be inadvisable.

Honestly, by the time 8GB isn't really "enough" any more, unless you do a LOT of RAM intensive tasks, you'll be ready to upgrade the motherboard and CPU, too. But, I'd look into some Noctua coolers. They tend to make a lot of different style coolers that have "100%" memory compatibility. And if you don't like the fans, you can always swap them out for standard size ones, like 92mm or 120mm. If you look back in the thread, for a long time I ran a Noctua NH-L9i which cooled very well for it's size. I eventually upgraded to a Noctua NH-D9L, and not really for better cooling, but just because I wanted to try out the newer cooler. Both of those fit excellently in the In Win 901, cool very well, are easy to install, allow pretty much any memory you want on board, and are around $50 or less on NewEgg and Amazon.

Hope that helps.

Looks pretty good overall. It'd be neat to see the R9 added to the loop.
Is that a Dell U3415W? If so, how do you like it? I'm just about ready to drop the cash for one.

Love my Dell! The increase in productivity by running 1 big screen has paid for it within weeks. The Dell in particular has good color so I can produce models that are accurate onscreen. It has an edge bleed problem that isn't relevant to me because my software uses a white model space fyi.

The nano waterblock connections would protrude outside the case! I think they mucked 901 dimensions up in relation to the width...
Anyway, the nano doesn't run very hot which is the reason I got it. Also it doesn't back over the intake so it's dropped temps by a few degrees over my old R9 390x. But you're right, adding it to the loop would add to the look and it's a disappointment that I can't do it.

Definitely go for the Dell if you don't use black backgrounds at night. It's got the best color registration outside of the super expensive pro screens.

Yeah, part of the reason I abandoned my 901 was because I felt it needed an extra, maybe even just ¼" inch extra in width, favoring the side with the components. Even with a reference design 670 the wires from the PCIe power were a little smushed from the glass panel.

Glad to hear you like it so much. I currently have three Dell U2414H's, which I believe is a very similar panel. Just a 16:9 24" 1080p version. Which they were nice, but I miss the the pixel density. I previously had a Dell U2711 (27" 2,560 x 1,440, pixels per inch was around 109 per inch. The Dell U3415W is about the height overall, but has more width. So it's about the same pixel density, 108 per inch. I could have those numbers backwards, but they're close enough. Lol

I did like triple 1080p, but the view field was just a bit too far, and things in games often looked stretched. Not that I game too much, but I wasn't a fan. The 21:9 seems to be a good balance between extra view field and lack of stretching/warping. So I'm looking forward to it. I might notice a bit of bleed in Lightroom, but hopefully not.
