foliage is one of the optimization to this game: ultra to high is quite nice gain of performance and this way the game can be played (without hair as well) on one 980ti oced with mod bios with 45-55 fps on 4k like i do.

strangely enough, I've always had some stutter in Hierarch Square on every card in my rig, R9 290/980/980Ti, but on 1080 it's completely gone after the lastest driver update. In others parts of the city though there was never any stutter, unless I was CPU bottlenecked, that is before I got a 4790K.

In your case I'm pretty sure it's the 4.1GHz 3570K with 1600 DDR3. There are a lot of places in Novigrad where my 980Ti was bottlenecked by 4.5GHz 3570K with 2400 DDR3. Getting a 3770K, overclocking it some and pairing with faster memory would alleviate it completely, witcher 3 uses all 8 logical threads on i7's.

i am going to upgrade motherboard and ram to the new kaby processers when they hit at the end of this year. so hopefully then i wont have issues..for the most part though the game runs great for me at 1440p . i am using a reshade i made along with some 4k textures. cant stand normal graphics. but it seems with any game i am unable to run it smooth at 60fps at 4k. with the exeption of some titles like the lego games.

With my CPU, I noticed that when NOT in Toussaint, it's best to force PhysX to GPU in nVidia's driver.

When in Toussaint, it's best to force PhysX to CPU.

Doing this helps some micro-stutters in cities.

I haven't done extensive testing on this, but it seems smoother to me.

Although, I could have gotten it backwards...

I do know that CD Projekt Red DID alter something in the way the game runs in Toussaint.

No, Novigrad is still the worse in terms of frame-time consistency... But I remember that my "hack" to smooth out the main-game maps were the opposite of Toussaint.

Again, I don't remember if it was PhysX CPU only in Toussaint and GPU in the main-game or vice versa.

But this probably had to do with having an AMD CPU... The game streams data and needs to decompress the data quickly... freeing it up from also having to do PhysX seemed to smooth out the frame-pacing.

Just experiment a bit... Racing around with Roach really tests the engine's streaming capabilities.

Ever walk into a fight and think to yourself... 'man, for being the same level monster as I am, it shouldn't be this hard...' ? Well, I have a super secret pro-tip for you... when you level up, USE. YOUR. POINTS. biggrin.gif
I am not level 12, my game time has been cut a good bit lately from being a grown up and such, and ran into that situation. I figured I'd check my stats and make sure I was using the best skills I had available. Well, surprise!.. .you have 5 skill points available... wha-smiley.png Well, that explains a bit. That and I have been wandering so much I hadn't bothered with alchemy in a while either. So, I spent the better part of the next 10 minutes allocating and equiping skills, and brewing some tasty potions. Yay, i'm making the most of my level now!

Let's go wander...

Far east Velen, since i'm still hunting ? marks and happened to see this giant tree that is BEGGING to be explored. I swim across the lake and climb some rock face to find a quiet, empty village. Ok, maybe its an abandoned spot i can reclaim, so what's around? Oh, I see a fogger in the distance... annoying, but doable, I've plenty of room to maneuver. Wait, ?? level... and he has friends... lots of friends... whistle.gif nothing to see here boys, don't mind me. ROACH, HELP! I sprint south through the first village and cross a bridge. 'Freedom!" I thought... next village will be better. Oh. Look. More Foggers. Fogging hell doh.gif Keep running! Maybe I can just skirt the hillside and find a way up.

Outside the village, well, it's quieter. For a time. This hill is all sorts of stubborn. Ooh! Big stone doors!... that are locked hmmsmiley02.gif ooook. So, moving on. Walking around I slide down a hidden culvert and darn near fall into a giant hole in the hillside into a glowing read room of scariness. No thanks. Gingerly sidestep my way around that, and home free. So, let's keep going. This hill is still super stubborn, just can't, quite, get up there... keep moving north and i'll find a way.

About 5 minutes later I find a hill slope that looks promising, AND is apparently the home of a large, angry Basilisk. A basilisk that is almost double my level... COME ON competitivesmiley.png Ok, so let's give this guy a shot. See IF I can take him down with patience. Nope, he's one tough mother. Time to run again! sigh... ok, so this tree can wait. Let's head farther north towards "civilization". Hrm, there's a lone tower up on the opposite hill, let's check it out.

Just to be safe, I'll rest up and save, I have less than stellar luck in this part of Velen. Work my way up to the tower only to find some large hunched over gentleman sitting near the front of the tower. Oh, look, a cyclops . If only he were like this, it may have been a better day. Well, he's level 19, so this could take a while. Again, thanks to all the open space, I can maneuver so I give it a shot. He hits like a truck, but is fairly easy to avoid once you watch his pattern. Needless to say, about 7 minutes later, he's dead. Phew... now, loot was quite nice too. Mastercraft Ursine set. Can't use it for a while, BUT I'll have it ready biggrin.gif

Almost time to call it a day, shall we explore southern Velen and see what is lurking down there? Folks, Velen is scary... the southern isle started out not too bad. Wraiths a plenty which are a nuisance, especially in groups. However there are two guarded treasures that I hope have good trinkets in the for when I return to take them. One is guarded by a lvl 20 Noonwraith, that is a tough mother AND hits for 80% or so of my life. Ok, no thanks, BYE! So, farther south... some fat thing lurking on a hill... hmm... it has wings. What the heck is it? Upon closer inspection, it's a large, angry gargoyle. I 'might' be able to chip away at it's health in like 200 or so strikes if it didn't one shot me with its ground stomp thumb.gif NO THANK YOU SIR. Ugh... 3rd times the charm? There's another ? below Sir Gargoyle of Badassia, and thankfully... it's just a place of power. An EMPTY place of power, ok. Thank you Lord... I'm leaving now lol.

The rest of the evening was spent playing Gwent across Velen and getting my butt kicked. I managed to complete the quest, but it took sheer dumb luck. lol

Never finished a game of Gwent.

All my Gwent guests failed.

That dude got killed because I don't like Gwent.

Didn't do the Casino quest.

I have loved playing Gwent in my evenings with this game. After playing Gwent for truly the first time in Blood and Wine and completing the quest there, I became hooked on the game. I am so hyped for the Gwent standalone card game that I am playing through again (B&BB) just to collect all the gwent cards and play them all.

In "Chapter 1 - Velen" you have a Northern Realms Deck. Make sure you change your leader card to the "doubles the strength of siege engines cards" and stock up on frost cards. Basically, your strat is to sacrifice a round if they load up on ranged power, then use your siege engines + leader ability to take round two. Then, in round three, you can frost their front row and win with your ranged cards and a commander's horn (get this card).

The cards with the "+<3" (plus inside a heart) are so nice. Redraw from your discard pile. Also, the spy cards are PERFECT for your sacrifice round.
