No soundcard for me.
Honestly, I wonder if a soundcard would help in terms of being connected to an actual receiver, or if the receiver is good enough on it's own.
But, sounds fantastic nonetheless

SchadowDistanceScale1=4 (Ultra=1)
ShadowDistanceScale2=3 (Ultra=1.5)
per nVidia Guide and my framerate decreased only by 4-6fps, going steady 45-50fps+, yet the difference is HUGE compared to generic Ultra settings! No more low quality distant shadows, no more shadow turning from low quality to high quality some 100 feet away, no more grass popping 100 feet away. Its SO CRISP now. Everything else on Ultra + HairWorks maxed out + in-game AA + SMAA & FXAA & LumaSharpen from ReShade SweetFX. I guess its normal though as nVidia guide shows very minor FPS loss from those ShadowDistanceScale tweaks, but it does show quite a significant loss when GrassDistanceScale is set to 6. However that was @ 4K, and yet that setting setting brought down SLi Titan X from 58fps to 22fps! I guess the effect is quite different at 1080p. Maybe its just the area I am in right now that runs so well. I wish we didn't have to use User.settings files and these settings would exit within game's Video Options.

EDIT:
Actually, I just found out that GrassDistanceScale resets to 5 when 6 is selected after game launch. The same goes for FoilageShadowDistanceScale - it resets itself from 108 to 64 once you launch the game...

The cascade settings have quite a big impact. I'm 35 hours in, and I am definitely not complaining...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I didn't say it was a rip off, I was trying to say it wasn't some amazing RPG.

Sony 5.1..? Sony what? Model?

To get 5.1 sound, you do need a soundcard with 5.1 analogue channel support or Dolby Digital / DTS support. Otherwise, how can you get 5 sound channels out of 2? That is called VIRTUAL "Surround", like Realtek's - it TRASH. Any VIRTUAL surround is trash. I recall Sony made 5.1 Virtual Surround Sound headphones for PS3 - they were utter garbage.

IMHO, the best solution is to get Sound Blaster Z and some good ANALOGUE Sennheiser headphones. My Sennheiser HD-280 Pro are entry-level monitoring headphones, but they sound better than Astro A50/A40 and Turtle Beach and pretty much all other crap headphones I had.

Developers said it takes about 100-120 hours to get everything done in the game, so I don't know about 200 hours. I'm just tired of constant cut scenes and complete lack of reward from any quest, other than experience. You cannot deny there is a SEVERE lack of items. There is plenty of ingiridents to craft things, but actual items are RARE.

Its also no different from Skyrim in regards to quests "Go here *long boring story* do this *long boring story*, find that *run around looking at HIGHLIGHTED tracks or items*, come back *another cut scene*". The ? marks are either MINOR treasures or bandit camps or some magic altars. Why on Earth would they place SPECIFIC question marks on the map??? Why the obvious hand-holding? Why not let the player find these locations? In Skyrim you don't get questions marks. You just happen to come across a cave and that makes it interesting. In Witcher 3 - you GO to EXACT locations on the map, resulting in ZERO need for exploration - ZERO!

I am not into competitive MP gaming myself, but the number of times it was helpful to figure out where my enemies were was very high. It is NOT a gimmick and it does provide accurate positional audio. You can hear when someone is in the back or in the front or to the side and you cannot hear that with 2.0 Stereo settings. We have Sound/Audio forum on OCN - why don't you go and ask there BEFORE you make such ridiculous claims??? Many of both SP and MP gamers (not all of course) use Dolby Headphone or CMSS3D or SBX Surround for their headphones if they own a proper soundcard.

No offense, but from my perspective you know just as much about positional audio as you know about SMAA, FXAA, SweetFX, and probably a ton of other things... Its OK to ask and its GREAT to learn, but it is NOT OK to provide dogmatic opinions and make statements that have no backing what-so-ever. I USED to be like you, except I dug deeper and kept asking, spending my time learning about audio and video from many SCIENFITIC sources with EVIDENCE and also from opinions of people who could back up what they were saying, not some member's "Its trash. It just is." posts! Then tried things out (if money allowed) on my own BEFORE I reached conclusions about something and only THEN I started making statements because I could always back them up with intelligible sources.

DH, Razer Surround, 3dwhatever Creative has is a gimmick, its trash, it doesnt do anything useful.
No one in the esports scene use 5.1 or 7.1 emulation because they know, just like every other sane person, its a gimmick.
It doesnt help, never will.

You can hear if someone is behind you or in front of you with normal "2.0" (as the headphones were built)

With emulation you can tell how far away a sound is? LOL.. DH and the other features cannot tell the distance of an object or player in a game. So thats bollocks.

I have a Xonar DX, I have Dolby Headphone along with 7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter, XEAR Surround Mix and EX Xear 3D.
All of it is trash.

"Many of both SP and MP gamers (not all of course) use Dolby Headphone or CMSS3D or SBX Surround for their headphones if they own a proper soundcard."

Because they know no better. These people are likely the same people who enjoy heavy bass that goes BOOM everytime a nickle drops on the ground. And likely cant tell difference between a 96kbit mp3 and a 320.

Also SweetFX used to have separate files for SMAA and FXAA.
2 different .DLL files.

I would also like to see some Witcher 3: Ingame AA vs Ingame AA + SMAA, Ingame AA + FXAA and one with INgame AA + SMAA + FXAA screenshots. At the exact same position.
Then we can see if it works or if its just you having placebo effect.

Or you were simply better than them.

Besides, dont see NIP, Fnatic and co sit with 5.1/7.1 emulated headsets.

Btw when you enable Virtual Surround, be it DH or something else. The volume overall increases making everything louder, thus easier to hear things.
Some may not notice the volume increase as the sound overall gets more "airy".

Try it with music.

I understand that you might have spent 60$ on this game you thought was going to be like skyrim, and I am sorry you were under the impression that it was. Can you enjoy it for what it's worth?
