That T.16000M FCS HOTAS looks real nice. I think I might just pick it up. Really hoping they make a few adjustments to it before it releases though. Has some nasty issues carried over from the base T.16000M that haven't been addressed, like the lack of a dust guard over the socket, the glaring light that can render large portions of a monitor useless in dark games like Elite and can't be turned off, and the sometimes too wobbly sometimes too stiff buttons.

In fact, I just mailed them regarding those issues, hoping it draws some attention to them and perhaps gets at least one or two fixed before launch. I encourage anyone else who is interested to do the same. Enough complaints about the same few problem points and they'll likely come up with a solution (well... the solutions are really rather obvious, like a toggle for the light within the TARGET software, they just need a reason to implement them).

So E:D just made it to the technology news section of the BBC...

Quote:
Elite Dangerous gamers are working feverishly to decipher a puzzle uncovered by one player of the space simulation.

The puzzle is in the shape of a map hidden in a signal sent when a player scanned a mysterious in-game object.

Some suspect that the signal means a hostile alien race is about to arrive in the game.

Space is dark and full of terrors.

ok so how do i play again?

i havent played the past couple patches, last time i was playing i was grinding robigo smuggling missions for creds - game seems much different now and im not sure where to jump back in.

I want to start playing this again too but I have a hard time getting myself motivated. It's such a "boring", menu based game that I have a hard time not just playing Battlefield or something instead. I like the idea of this game but I spend 90% of the time either waiting or docking and undocking from stations.

Depends on what you want to do. At the moment I'm doing some material collecting on planets to craft engineer modules. They overhauled the system last patch, so it's far easier to find things in greater quantities and get the upgrades you want. Currently sitting at 3,200 shield capacity on my Cutter for laughs.

If you don't have Horizons, I can't offer much advice beyond doing some trading or combat for fun, since I spend most of my time on planets these days.

I feel you. My goal was to build a ship that could sustain itself for very long periods of time without docking, so I just get my ammo restocks and stuff down on planet surfaces with synthesis. Maybe build a laser heavy ship and go bounty hunting? Without ammo to worry about, really the only limit is how long you can go without sustaining serious damage.

Another thing that might motivate you is to check out some of the audiobooks available for the game. I recommend Tales from the Frontier, it's about 16 hours long and extremely good. I've found that immersing myself in the lore of the game has given me a greater understanding of the how's and why's, and has enriched my experience. If you don't feel like doing that, I've heard VR can really be a game-changer if you can afford it.

i do have horizons, its all the updates that added content to the game (recently, like last 3-4 months) that im not sure how to tackle.
synthing and being self sufficient sounds really nice.

a few months ago i was just doing smuggling missions in my asp explorer getting empire rep and making creds. i achieved baron rank, picked up a clipper and kitted it out. so with the asp and clipper kitted out im sitting on 250m creds still. so i have ships and creds to play around with. the asp explorer is mostly for range with like 60T of cargo space for the smuggling missions. the clipper is mostly for bounties, its been a while since i logged in so i forget the exact load out.

im up for anything really, im a pretty well rounded player so any suggestions you have will be great.

Should I then assume that if I were to get back into the game, as an owner of Horizons, that I would be on or near planets frequently?

I really never touched planets before aside from the occasional curiosity to see what was there. The missions didn't seem to pay any better than space missions, but doing them had all sorts of downsides, like the atrociously long landing and taking off from planets sequence, the incredibly poor frame rate induced by rendering the planet even at the lowest detail, etc.

If the current state of the game is going to be putting me in contact with planets frequently, I might just have to avoid it until I can get a new GPU.

The Clipper is a pretty spectacular multi-role ship, imo. I'd kit her out to start doing Engineers, honestly. Except for when you've got to mine, this build should do fine for engineers stuff:

https://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_clipper/0pktkFflndpsnf47l7l0s0s000004044k05v4320iC02i2f.Iw1+gDNpA===.Aw18aQ==

It's got a collector unit, great fuel scoop, 64 tons of cargo space, two SRVs, and both scanners, as well as an AFMU. I'd focus on getting the FSD modifications first, and make your life easier. You'll probably have to dock at some point, but even if you only grab 32 tons of collectors, you should last quite awhile out there.

I spend most of my time down there because it's easy to find engineering materials. And I like doing crazy jumps like an idiot across canyons and such.

thats awesome but i guess i need to figure out what all that is (like what the engineering stuff actually is) in order to use the ship properly.

I'll give you an overview:

7A Shield Generator= expensive, but the best shield a Clipper can get. Clipper's have awful shielding despite being large ships, so I like to get as much shield strength as possible.

6E Cargo Rack= gives 64 tons of general purpose cargo. You need a cargo rack to store your limpets.

4G Planetary Vehicle Hanger= holds two SRVs. Some people like to just have one around, since you can repair/rearm them on planets, but I like to have an extra in case I blow mine up (which I do. You see a big canyon, you HAVE to jump it. It's like... a law)

4A Fuel Scoop= used to harvest hydrogen fuel from stars. This one will fill you up in 46 seconds at the optimal distance.

3A Auto-field maintenance Unit= it's ammo is used to repair your internal modules. Use it when you land rough, etc. It can't repair your hull, so you'll still have to dock to take care of that. I think ammo for this can be crafted by synthesis, but I'm not 100% sure.

3A Collector Limpet Controller= used to launch collection limpets. It makes collecting things you find in space much easier. This controller can launch a max of two. Remember that you need to buy limpets for this at stations. I'm hoping they'll let us use synthesis to craft drones soon, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

1C Detailed Surface Scanner= gives you more info on planets. Use this to reveal exactly what you'll get, materials wise, from a certain planet, and the percentages.

1C Advanced Discovery Scanner= ping this at a star to reveal all planets in the system. You'll still have to go up to them and target them to get any real information, but this will reveal locations and counts.

As far as engineering stuff, use a website like INARA to find what you need, and where to get it. Engineering mods do a great many things, including but not limited to FSD range boosts, shield strength boosts, hull resistance boosts, and weapon damage boosts.
