i just bought in last night, its rough starting out with no tutorials or that many guides posted online on how to get going. i'm completely new to the genre.
i still had a good bit of fun though, more landing sessions after work today, hopefully this time ill crash less.
Yeah my suggestion would be to scour the Elite Dangerous Frontier Forums. The community is VERY mature and more than willing to help if asked for. There is a docking tutorial video but I had to figure out the ins and outs of it myself.
Just a few recent screenshots. Can't wait to try this out on the Rift DK2. It's already pretty amazing on 3 screens, and not just because of the added fov. One of the most immersive games I've played in a while I'd say.
Thanks reloaded, I'm currently working on trying to get facetracknoir working to see what it's like. I'm too cheap to buy a trackIR and I only want to use head tracking for free or on OR CV.... Beautiful shots as always. Keep them coming!
update on my learning experience, i completed a trade run last night, ibootis to aulin (aurlin?) running fish to and then HE Suits back until i get the monies for the terraforming material.
its crazy this is a genre i thought i could never get into and suddenly i find myself having a blast playing it, i may be even addicted (slighty)
any recommendations on sticks? i was looking at x52s but im even considering just dropping the $200 and getting the x55 hotas. im a peripheral junkie so this just helps out round the collection lol.
I originally picked up a Thrustmaster T.16000 joystick and used my G13 for throttle controls, with the little joystick for the vertical and horizontal thrusters. Then I picked up a regular Satiek X52 from ebay and am loving it so far. There are far less buttons to program on the throttle compared to using my G13, but there are way more buttons on the joystick to program that are easily accessable unlike the T.16000. It really completes the experience to have an actual throttle instead of a keybaord. Only problem is that I can't seem to program the little "mouse" pointer joystick on the throttle to be an axis like it seems to state in the programming software. E still only recognizes it as a mouse, so using the hat to control thrust sucks compared to having the analog movement of the joystick on the G13.
I looked at the X55 as well, and would go that way if I could afford it. The X52 was only $40, and the T.16000 was $25, so I'm doing things on the cheap.

hey you know the devs love the x52 and that there is a profile in the menu with the buttons already mapped for it, all you have to do is it set it to x52 (which is the main reason im considering getting one).
and yeah i think having a joystick and throttle will really complete the experience, now if i could just get two more VG248QE's debezel and find a nice triple monitor stand i would be in heaven
Yeah I had read about the pre-configured set up for the X52 (and that the in game controls are modeled after it), but was just wanting to see how it played with the throttle over the keyboard, and didn't mess with the controls much. Not sure if that will allow me to use the stick as a thrust control, but it can't hurt to try. I'll do more research here soon as when I get more time, I'd really like to be able to use that stick as an analog control. That would make the set up PERFECT. Here's to hoping!

Well, the X52 has a little "nub" on the throttle. It's basically the same as you used to see on laptops in the middle of the keyboard to manipulate the mouse. In the software, you can change it from mouse input to joystick axis, which is what I want. For some reason, the game still only recognizes it as a mouse input though and I can't map my vertical and horizontal thrusters to it.
In the end I'll be using both the X52 joystick and throttle together, and have been using the G13 directly to the right of the throttle to control things I couldn't map to it. I'm just waiting for a PS/2 cable so I can connect the joystick up.

CH is a company that makes professional industrial joysticks, for applications ranging from farming equipment to post panamax container cranes and bucket wheel excavators. And it shows, even in their limited product range for gamers. You don't get bling, metal fillets or shiny leds and screens. What you do get though is a professional - srs buziness - HOTAS setup built to last a lifetime of gaming. And also a marvelous Control Manager to customize your controls as extensively as humanly possible (best on the market by far).
Hell, there are many gamers that have converted to USB and still using the same Flightstick Pro controllers for 15+ years now..
The setup is:
pitch/roll on stick
yaw on pedals
main engine on throttle (forwards and backwards, E has a full 6df flight model)
horizontal and vertical strafing on the throttle thumb mini joystick (true analog control, not a hat switch like other HOTAS)
The only downside is the rather steep price, and purging yourself from the notion that fake bling metal fillets make a good HOTAS setup. Hope that helps, cheers
In other news, here are a couple of comparison pictures between what FDEV has sold us as concept art in the KS campaign and what they have really done with it ingame. It is really surprising when a developer manages to out-do his own marketing concept art.
@ dante
those CH products look great but its like $100 for each option and I have to get the pedals for the yaw which im not crazy about (although could be lots of fun).
perhaps ill just get the stick and pedals to start and use the kb to throttle for now like i have been and just get the throttle later when more money allows.
in any case can i upgrade the sidewinders cargo hold? or am i just waiting to save up for my next ship which hopefully has more cargo, whatever that is?

You need to save up for a ship with a bigger cargo hold. The Hauler isn't super expensive and has 16 slots I believe. I want to say it was less than the Eagle I bought recently, and that was about 16,000 credits.
Sidewinder ---- Hauler ---- then it's up to you.. You can splurge for a Cobra III at about 100k (36 cargo slots) or you can get the Lakon type 6 for about 200k (100 cargo slots) I like both for different things!

Regarding CH, you don't really need the pedals. You can move yaw to a hat switch in your joystick or to the throttle with no problems. I am a little biased myself btw, since I loath twist action in joysticks (it makes them rather flimsy). If you do go with CH, grab the throttle at all costs and forgo the pedals. Elite Dangerous requires accurate throttle management for dogfighting, and having that mini analog joystick on your thumb position for strafing is invaluable.
Regarding the sidey now. You will be able to upgrade the cargo hold as we move forward to release, but right now there is no module for it. If you want to practice trading, your next target is the Zorgon Peterson Hauler, that has a cargo hold size of 16tons. Its a wicked little ship (click on thumb for full res).
And it also sports an engine that sounds like the gates of hell have opened..XD

Hmm. The Hauler is available in either iBootis or Asellus Primus I think? I know I saw it at one of the close by systems. I want to say it was 12,000-13,000, so you'll have plenty of money to buy one. Only 1 hard point though, so don't expect to be dog fighting in it.
Btw, I finally was able to get a rail gun for my Eagle, and OMG I love that gun! Amazing stuff! It's so cool sounding/looking and fun to fire. It's too bad my poor little stock Eagle can't handle powering it on without turning other systems off. And then I tried bringing out the pulse laser AND rail gun together, and I have to turn off my sensors and other very important items just to fire both. So, rail gun only it is.
Aulin and Bootis I sell all the ships EXCEPT The anaconda. The anaconda has only been reported to be sold at LHS 3009 (I think) Don't rush out to buy one just yet. It's 6.6 million.
