Thought I would share my experience with a Haswell-E 5960X Processor!
I was lucky enough to spend a little time with a water cooled 5960X and an X99 motherboard. I had 16gb of DDR4-2133.
I was very interested in seeing what the overclock potential was going to be on the 8 core chip clocked @ 3.0Ghz out of the box. If preliminary results are any indication, (and they absolutely may NOT be). Potential might be there...I was able to get up to 4.5Ghz until the board would not go any higher due to overall "bugginess"
My quick observations:
Let me state that the X99 Board I was using (not going to name brand) was VERY VERY buggy...(Pre Production) the beta Bios that I received did not allow for any voltage above 1.3V...The board would just shut down when testing above 1.3V, sometimes it would not boot...etc...
Temps seemed very low...? but this also could be bugs...
The motherboard drivers supplied were also Beta...but felt like alpha...lots of issues with PCI lanes, stability, etc...
CPU always seemed to be on a 60% CPU load...could not figure out why even thought when looking at processes it showed no processor load.....again more bugs..
Realtemp would only show 6 out of the 8 cores...
Pretty much guaranteed that as the next few weeks go by, the platform will mature...It's going to be a fun fall with Haswell-E!! and X99. Can't wait to build a new rig with it!
RealTemp GT only supports the 6 core CPUs. Core Temp might work on these new 8 core CPUs.
The Windows 8.1 Task Manager - Performance tab does not calculate the CPU Utilization % correctly on the 4 core CPUs. Here's an example with a steady load.
Software should be reporting 50% plus a small percentage for the Windows background tasks. The Task Manager either reads significantly too high or too low. On my 4 core CPU, the Task Manager - Details tab actually shows the correct 50% while the Performance graphs are showing 71% so the bug you found has been there for a while.
RealTemp reads TJ Max info directly from the CPU and it is showing that this CPU will start to thermal throttle at only 87°C. Hope they bump that up when the retail processors are shipped. If Intel "accidentally" used a very low TJ Max value for this ES processor, all monitoring software is going to report the core temperature too low. Those numbers look great when new CPUs are being reviewed but might not be very accurate. Try pushing the Defaults button in the RealTemp - Settings window just to make sure that is is reading the correct value for TJ Max directly from the CPU.

Cheers for sharing OP, but no DDR4 benchmarks?
At least provide a small hint.......are they noticeably faster than DDR3 in real world usage & synthetics ?
