Underpowered PSU

What's the danger of running a GPU with a slightly underpowered PSU?

Are you likely to damage either of them, or will you just BSOD/crash etc?

i had a psu that was dying and would shut down the pc with no warning anytime anything would slightly stress it. I would assume the same effect would happen when running an underpowered psu. shouldn't see it damaging any of the components as it shouldn't put a surge of voltage through anything or burn anything out but i wouldn't run something knowing that there wasn't an adequate psu behind it anyway.

Thanks. I'm just waiting for my new PSU after changing my GPU to arrive and thought it best to check. Sounds like I won't damage anything if I run it lightly? So far so good anyway, and haven't had any crashs/BSODS etc yet...

so you are waiting on a stronger/better psu to be able to power your system and just wanted to keep it running with an under-powered one in the meantime then?

Bascially yes - I've got the below setup currently (3960X and 780ti Classified (surprisingly) running on a 560W Gold...) and am just waiting on my 860W Platinum - just want to keep the system running in the interim.

if you are still running that 3960x at 4.8oc i would back it off to stock just to save a bit more juice and make sure there are no problems. how long do you have to wait on this new PSU?

here are some facts for you to consider.

that seasonic is a true 560w.

that 3960x and 780ti classy complete system while under load pulls about ~440watt from the wall (~395w from the psu).
http://www.hardwareluxx.com/index.php/reviews/hardware/vgacards/29152-test-evga-geforce-gtx-780-ti-classified.html?start=5

that still leave ~150w of power at your disposal with the 560w. that 860w will be plenty when you decide to go sli.

hopefully these links are helpful.
