Kraken X31 Rattling Pump Noise

Thread Starter
I just purchased a Kraken X31 + G10 to mount on my GTX 780. Everything went well, temperatures dropped by 20-25C on the core depending on fan speed. I also added heatsinks to the VRAM and VRMs, so I am covered.

The problem I am having though is the pump. The pump emits this terrible rattling noise, regardless of speed. It is advertised as a variable speed pump, but even when you connect it to CAM(NZXT's monitoring software) you aren't given the option to change pump speed, only fan speed. In order to change pump speed, you have to use a motherboard fan header, and the controllable range is only 3000-4000. The fan speed is controllable through CAM, but it is not very good, often taking 30 seconds or longer to take effect. I ended up uninstalling CAM because controlling everything through Fan Xpert II was much more easy, and didn't require much CPU power. CAM is a serious resource hog, my usage was at 20% while CAM was running which is crazy for a monitoring software, I prefer my HWiNFO.

I own a Cooler Master Seidon 240M for my CPU, and I love that thing, got it for $56 after rebates and discounts on Newegg, what a fantastic buy. That pump has a very slight buzzing noise, which is not noticeable unless you open up the side panel and strain to hear it. The buzz is normal, but this rattling from the X31 is something I have never heard before, it can be heard with the side panel closed, and it is continuous.

Anyways, what should I do about this rattling pump? Is it defective? Is this just how it is? Should I return it?

Something that needs to mount hard onto is it going to be hard to minimize the vibrations unless the pump is installed externally like custom watercool designs.

*Bump*

having same problem. Just installed Kraken x31 on a Kraken G10 GPU adapter onto my EVGA GTX660.

On startup, it wasn't there. There was some gurgling noises, I presume as the pump was operating for the first time, and a very low whirring. I went downstairs for 5 minutes to collect the stuff I'd left downstairs putting it together; came back up, there's this constant rattling noise. It's louder than both my 6 NZXT case fans and Corsair H80i - VERY distracting. Anyone able to comment further as to why this noise is being made?

@PinkoTheCommi one question, where have you positioned the radiator? Mine is in the forward top fan bay of my NZXT Phantom 410, and I was wondering if the rattling could be caused by the pump working extra hard to pump the fluid vertically?

Many thanks.

EDIT: so after removing the side panel of my PC while it was still on, pressing stuff etc, it looks like the rattling is caused by the air from my side-panel fan blowing over the mounting when it's on max speed. At least, when I turn the fan controller on the case down to mid, the rattling stops. Strange, since there's no obvious part that could be making the rattling.

Hey there, I did manage to fix the problem, or at least it doesn't happen as frequently. I have a Phanteks Enthoo Pro, and my radiator is positioned at the rear exhaust.

Its strange because I had a similar occurrence, the rattling noise was not there when I first got the system running, but started up about an hour later. What I did to fix the problem was to uninstall the G10 and Kraken, then plug the Kraken back in, but that moving the radiator and block/pump around to get the water flowing to get rid of any air pockets. I reinstalled the Kraken and G10 but the rattling persisted, but not as loud. Finally, I removed the USB portion of the cable and I plugged the pump fan header in directly into the motherboard without anything else interfering, I then ran my Asus Fan Tuning, and I then set the pump speed manually in the RPM mode, this has solved the problem. It only starts if I push the speed too high or too low, when it is in the middle, it works just fine.

I had the same issue with my new X31. Turns out that the USB plug was causing the issue. As soon as I unplugged the USB cable the noise went away.

Same. CAM Software is an absolute joke and a parasite on your system. You cannot control your fan speed or pump speed through CAM, and it is a resource hog.

By removing the USB cable and switching everything over to motherboard fan headers, I was able to properly control everything from Fan Xpert and the noise went away.

Agree about the CAM software... It did allow me to control the fan speed (and pump to a certain extent), but the program is a massive resource hog due to the graphical user interface. In theory it would be good but the pump making grinding noises just renders it pointless (I think nzxt overlooked this issue or just didn't test it well enough before production).

Anyway, I've found another way to control my fans, I'm using a VGA pwm adapter cable on the graphics cards to control the radiator fans with a Y-splitter, using afterburner fan profile (as it is based on GPU temp and not CPU temp which my msi motherboard headers are limited to). As for the pump, I find running it at a constant 9v is quiet enough and performs just fine.

just have installed my kraken x31. it was a refurbished unit, so I guess someone has returned it due to the noise. as this is going to be in a gaming ITX rig in my living room, the noise is a problem. It is not very loud, but I must say that both Corsair h55 and tundra were dead silent compared to X31. A very positive thing is that I have 4690k @ 4.1GHz now running 28C idle / 50C stress, however.

Tried many things to calm down the pump noise, The very best was to unplug the USB cable from the motherboard. Rattling decreased significantly, but is still present.

Any of you guys, X31 owners, did something more not described in this thread that helped with the noise?
