P8P67 Pro wont post (no display)

Hi,

These are my specs firstly:

ASUS P8P67 PRO REV 3.1
XFX GTX 295
i5 2500k
OCZ GAMEXSTREAM 850W PSU
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2
Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9G Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP 1.35v
Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive
Antec 900 case

I upgraded the motherboard and the CPU to the ones mentioned above and all the other parts which is in the list came from my old build (which has a different cpu socket).

I first built it up and at first the DRAM LED light was on I held down the memok button let it do its thing and then it rebooted with a CPU LED light on constant. I tried resetting the CMOS and still the same issue. Tried one stick of ram in each slot and it still has the same problem.

One thing I found strange is the fact that sometimes when it boots the cpu light wont come on at all and it still wont post any display, although this is rather quite rare when it happens.

Does the CPU LED light fundamentally mean that its a problem with just that?

A friend tested the cpu and psu in his computer and they was working completely fine.

I am going to reseat the CPU soon and possibly try building it out of the case, but if it was shorting wouldn't the board just cut out straight away? As it stays on untill I turn it off.

Any help is much appreciated even if it doesn't work.

Thanks,

Paul

UPDATE:

Someone recommended me to change the GPU to the 2nd PCIE slot due to P67 chipsets not liking dual gpus or something. Tried it and it seems to of got rid of the CPU light completely.

Problem is now I just cant get it to post anything at all on the screen.

Have you tried one ram stick in each slot (individually). E.g put one stick in DIMM slot 1, if doesn't work, put the same stick on slot 2 (no other slots populated with ram) and test again, repeat same steps for slot 3 and 4.

Hi.

Yeah I did try that. I'm totally confused I don't think it's hardware fault as no lights are lighting up I just get no display.

My memory isn't actually in the supported memory list on the site but I hear that that list isn't extensive and doesn't show all memory, can anyone shed light on that for me as I'm a noobie.

Cheers

Just have something to add, I noticed on the memory list support page that it has 1.5v- and above memory. The memory I'm using is 1.35v would that cause a problem such as no display on the screen?

I've ordered memory which cost me ÂŁ70 so hopefully it works, I ordered this: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP

Page 2-19 of your manual shows the post LED's. When you boot do each of these LED's turn on and then off like they are suppose to or do any not come on at all or do any come on and stay on?

Do you have a discrete GPU installed or does your CPU have an internal GPU that you are using?

If using a discrete GPU, take it out and try the internal GPU on the CPU if you have one.

The VGA LED and the BOOT DEVICE LED do not come on at all during boot.

Here is a video of what happens

VGA I'm guessing is the GPU, even with the GPU out of the case it boots without that light and the light should stay on right?

and the BOOT DEVICE is obviously the HDD and without that plugged in it doesn't stay a light either.

If everything is working correctly on your Asus MB when booting then the CPU LED goes on then off, then the dram LED goes on then off, then the VGA LED goes on then off then the boot device LED goes on then off then the monitor should display the system posting.

If your CPU LED goes on/off then the dram LED goes on/off and the VGA LED does not do anything you probably have a bad motherboard or GPU or the cable from the GPU to your monitor or the monitor.

Make sure that your GPU is seated properly.

Can you test your GPU, monitor and monitor cable in a different PC?

Do you have power from you PSU plugged directly into your GPU? That GTX 295 is going to need more power than just from the PCIe slot, look at your GPU manual if you do not know what i am talking about.

Only have plugged in the minimum that you need to boot and post, mouse, keyboard, one stick of ram, GPU.

You could try taking the motherboard out of the case and put it on a piece of cardboard or a wood table and see if it will post out of the case. Do not hook up any cables from the case to the motherboard except the power button.

Try putting your GPU back in PCIe 2.0 x16_1 Slot (Page 2-14 of your manual),

Try resetting your BIOS back to default by resetting your CMOS, directions are on Page 2-21 of your manual then see if it will at least post.
You can

Ok thanks I will try all that, as you can see from the video the dram led comes on and off and the cpu on and off.

I moved the gpu to slot one and it still does the same thing as in slot 2, no led or anything. Without a gpu plugged in shouldn't the VGA led stay lit?

And same for the boot device led, shouldn't that stay lit with no hdd plugged in? And also will it post to bios without a hdd?

Bare in mind my hdd still has windows on from my previous build, will that be a problem?

Since it never gets past the VGA LED the boot device LED will never come on. You do not have to have a HD connected for the system to post, you could just have a CD/DVD connected. I think that you really would not need either for it to post since you can boot off a USB and your MB has USB ports on the back I/O.

It seems to me that you probably have a bad motherboard. If you test your GPU, monitor and cable in another setup and those test good then take your CPU out and make sure that you do not have any bent pins. If you do not have any bent pins and you put everything back together outside the case and it still won't post then clear CMOS, if that does not work then I think that the next thing you need to try is a different motherboard since you already tested the CPU and PSU.

Hi

Yeah it maybe a bad motherboard but also putting it down to compatibility issues with the board as when I take the memory out of the board the speaker has 1 long and 2 short beeps which suggests memory problems cause obviously the memory is out. But if it is beeping that means that the bios is running right? so therefore the CPU is working.

With all the parts plugged in I get no beeps whatsoever, I will await for new memory to turn up if that doesn't work I will try a new GPU and if that doesn't work I'm sending the board back.

Thanks for all the help.

I had a P8P67 Pro v1.0 randomly die the other day, I ended up replacing the BIOS chip (it would boot saying that the BIOS was damaged) and it was all good after that. As for no display have you got a spare GPU to test it out on?

Hi.

How did you replace the bios chip? Isn't it soldered on?

And unfortunately I don't have one, the gpu worked in my old board so I'm not sure why it wouldn't with this one. I'll have to wait and see though.

Thanks
