Added Exhaust Fan?

Would like to see if anyone has attempted what I am thinking about doing. I have the Fractal Design R4 w/window and since switching my H100i (mounted on top) as intake, my GPU and case air has been running warm. My GPU isnt terrible usually maxes out around 75-76c but the temp in the case gets as high as 43c. I have been thinking of drilling into the window side of my case to add an extra exhaust fan, in order to get rid of this warm air blowing out of my GPU. Is there anything I need to know before trying to do this? Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!! thumb.gif

Gonna sound crazy, but i would recommend the H100i as outtake, *seal the side panels on the inside with electrical tape*, and run a negative pressure build. All of the fan mounts (with the exception of the rear exhaust) are well filtered. Your cpu temps will go up just a bit, and the air demands will take care of themselves.

I've noticed that, with open air coolers like yours, they do better when the hot air they dump is taken away, as opposed to just more outside air being introduced.

Are you maxing your cpu on this though? If so, i'd suggest mounting an extra 120 in the floor, as opposed to cutting that acrylic, and keep the top as intake. Just get a silverstone magnetic filter for the bottom to go with that new hole. This would, of course, let you keep a positive pressure build. :-)

Keep us posted here! I'd like to see if any of this works as I think it should!

Thanks for the input. I probably should have been more clear on what set up I had at the moment. I have 2 Noctua NF-A14 PWMs as intake on the front of my case, bottom of the case is the stock Fractal Design 140mm fan as intake, rear of the case has the stock Fractal Design 140mm fan as exhaust. Then like I mentioned I have H100i mounted on top of my case as intake with 2 Noctua F12s. I did have the H100i set us as exhaust which yielded better case temps, but the CPU would run much hotter (5-10c more).
CPU is OCed 4.2 at 1.23v, didnt do too well in the silicon lotto I had to run 1.32v in order to get stable at 4.4, just didnt want to run all that extra voltage for such a small gain in speed.

I'll be honest, bruh. This is a tough one.

Have you played with the idea of having the front fan on the H100i as intake, and the back and rear as both exhaust? I would try that before I cut a hole in the side of that pretty case.

Or better yet (madness), have both noctuas in the front as exhaust. As wiser men than myself have said "air goes where you push it". I've constructed the box in my sig build as something of a chambered system, with the front as intake, and the bottom side fan as exhaust, and i've seen my temps on both card and cpu drop by ~5C.

So the setup would be as follows:

H100i - intake, rear - exhaust

Front 2 - exhaust, bottom - intake.

Remove grill on exhaust rear fan.

Sorry man, this is the best i've got. I would look up any fan guides/aircooling stickys by user "doyll", however. There's another aircooling fella on here, but I can't recall his name. He's more likely in the same threads. He, doyll, and Martin are your go-to guys.

I have talked some to doyll and he is very knowledgeable! I just though drilling a few holes for mounting a 120mm fan and then a few more for the actual vents themselves would be an easy job to reduce the case heat. I think Fractal Design sells just the side panel itself in case I were to screw it up...but just would like to do something, 43c sounds awfully high to me lol

The idea is sound enough. As long as you're able to cut the material and apply the fan correctly, you'll see a decent temp drop.

Yeah basically the GPU exhaust blows right at my clear side panel and bounces the warm air off from there. So I was thinking if I could drill a few holes and fit a fan there that it would drastically reduce my case temps.

If you think you can do, then go for it. thumb.gif When you go shopping for new cases, the good ones have that vented window where the gpu is. Seems like a no-brainer nowadays.
