Mini HTPC/Plex server

Thread Starter
Hello OCN!
I'm building a new Plex server since one of my ram sticks took a crap on me. I'm currently running an athlon64 x2 in my server so this is going to be a big upgrade on the server side.
First, the plan: to build a mini form factor plex server that will also serve as my HTPC on my 60" plasma. Why, because i hate Samsung's interface on the smart tv.

ALL of the parts have to fit in my case.
I'm modifying my old Xbox case to fit this.

The parts i have selected are as follows:

Mobo: ASUS H97I-PLUS
http:/www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=13-132-123&nm_mc=EMCWL-082014&cm_mmc=EMCWL-082014-_-index-_-Item-_-13-132-123&et_cid=10522&et_rid=9972150

CPU: Intel Core i3-4330

PSU: SeaSonic SS-300TFX Bronze 300W

I have an old OCZ Agility 2 OCZSSD2-2AGTE60G 2.5" 60GB SSD that ill use for the OS

So somethings i need help with. is the current intel apu better then the amd?
This set up is very tight. so i am looking for anyway to save space. (L 9" x W 11 1/2" x H 3")
Any better cooling options. i was hoping i could go fan-less but i dont think it will be possible.

edit: i submitted when i meant to preview, oops

Have you mapped it out yet to see if all that will fit? If you start falling short of space I would consider a Pico PSU. They make a 125 watt unit which should be more than enough power for what you're doing.

Without the parts on hand i truely cant say that it will all fit 100%, but by my measurements it should. (i could always mod it to fit, heh.) I love the idea of a PicoPSU, and have considered it. However, all of them only have one sata and one pata power cord.. Is splitting them really safe for a long-term 24-7 htpc/server. Also, my estimates put my need at about 200w (leaving enough power to add a tv tuner or other pcie card)

Just found this on another build log on OCN
http://www.hd-plex.com/HDPLEX-250W-Hi-Fi-DC-ATX-Power-Supply-16V-24V-Wide-Range-Voltage-Input.html

It looks really nice, anyone ever used one?

Here is a link to a PSU calculator if you want to double check what you will need.
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Just add your components or next best match, future addons and click calculate. I like the look of the HD plex but I have never used it. Sorry.

I can't say which is better, but I use an i3-4130T in my HTPC which is a Plex Client, and the iGPU in that works perfectly. I can play raw Blu-ray mkv rips with no dropped frames. I do *not* think it would be up to transcoding and serving media to other devices at high resolution, especially multiple concurrent streams. But if you are just going to be playing locally/won't be doing much transcoding, that Intel chip will do you just fine.

now im thinking of changing it up a bit, and going with an AMD rig

CPU: AMD A10-7850K Kaveri
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113359

MOBO: ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+

RAM: AMD Radeon R9 Gamer Series 8GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820403050&cm_re=AMD_Radeon_R9_Gamer_Series-_-20-403-050-_-Product

PSU: HDPLEX 250W Hi-Fi DC-ATX
http://www.hd-plex.com/HDPLEX-250W-Hi-Fi-DC-ATX-Power-Supply-16V-24V-Wide-Range-Voltage-Input.html

The p[rice is only slightly higher because of the better ram and PSU.

Would do we think?

That PSU looks pretty cool, it must be a new product. I have an HD-PLEX case for my silent HTPC and that wasn't available when I built it. My 125 watt Pico powers everything without any problems but I only have the MB, CPU, RAM, & SSD. You never mentioned a TV tuner in your first post and I have no idea how much power those use.

The PC in my fanless case will play Blu-ray rips all day long and the CPU temp will never rise over 45C.

Any updates on this? I'd really like to see the finished product - if you were able to get it to fit in the old Xbox chassis.

Ua sorry I ended up starting a new job and had to get settled in there before I started dropping money on a new build.
It's actually a good thing though, cause my kids want something they can play steam games on so I may have to fix a gfx card in there too!
I should start in a month or two.
I did have a glass piece cut to replace the Xbox jewel, but that's it.
