It wouldn't be a bunch of R&D money. The chip is already developed and the architecture is already available on the FM2+ platform. The only cost would be in drawing up the mask and putting the chip into production in place of Kaveri--probably several million dollars, but not a lot in terms of the economy of scale that we're talking about. If they don't think they can sell enough of them to justify putting it into production, they still won't do it, though.

Anyway, there's been speculation that this might happen for months already. If there's a new FM2+ product, it might be a Kaveri refresh, similar to what they did when Richland supplanted Trinity.

I can't say I'm pleased with AMD if this is true. I bought into this platform on the assumption that the Excavator core would be available for it.

Wasnt AMD road map showing carrizo 65W TDP configurable + FULL HSA on FM2+... that was showed in 2014 Q3-4?

AMD mobility in (maybe Q4 20) Q1 2015... dekstop Q2-3 2015.

Basically it doesnt make sense ... AMd can easy update their lineup with few new carrizo parts for FM2+.

Carrizo may have much higher memory bandwidth thats where they can get power efficiency and performance.

Well on all roadmaps they have text which says "plans are subject to change at any moment" and it's likely they decided that releasing Carrizo on FM2+ wouldn't be worth it financially.

from where you get that... that article is trolling...

Techreport is very reputable, and they're just reporting what AMD told them at CES.

It could be as simple as Excavator, like Steamroller, has problems reaching higher clock speeds. They had to lower the clock speed of the A10 APU from 4.1 to 3.7 to bring out Kaveri, and even with overclocking it struggles to reach 4.5. They can haul Carrizo out at much lower speeds than that and it be a competitive mobile part, but if whatever they've had to do to improve IPC in Excavator limits clock speeds any more, then desktop Carrizo doesn't make any sense. Frankly, I have no use for a 3.3 GHz 65W TDP quad-core chip that can't overclock worth a darn, and if that's what desktop Carrizo would have to be, then AMD shouldn't bother.

But if that's the case, then at least deliver a Kaveri refresh, like they did with Richland.

No one is saying that AMD is abandoning desktop, because in fact AMD aren't abandoning it. But it turns out that 2015 will be a boring year for AMD in regards to consumer desktop.

Kaveri 45-65W TDP isn't on that roadmap because it's a mobile roadmap.

i dont think that is the problem and the reason.... well then in 2016 or later in 2015. Maybe they are waiting for zen core... maybe saving money...

I really want to see carrizo mobility benchmarks....

Thread Starter
Carrizo will be on desktop, it just won't be FM2+. This is mainly, do to organizing of the Carrizo/-L/-E SKUs and the iFCH being important.

Carrizo
Carrizo-L
Carrizo-E

Will be on the same sockets.
---
On the base of Excavator, there is architecture improvements, node improvements, and generally more HSA support.

Higher clocks at lower TDPs.
Higher normal performance with same units.
CPU <-> GPU memory coherency a lot smoother.
etc.
