Unfortunately pci slot 3 is cancelled out when running two cards in 1 and 4 which really is the only other place you can put the intel drive. Once you shove anything in pci 5 it slows down the m2 to x2. While the random reads and writes don't seem to be affected at all the 4k read and write speed take a huge performance hit on the m2.

I'm a little bummed about it, I'm not about to strip the system down and watercool the gpu's just to get them a slot closer to each other at x8 as I feel some other bs will pop up as a hurdle and at this point I think I've spent enough money on this build.

I did manage to overclock the machine to 4.2Ghz at 1.3 volts but it was just running too hot for comfort, it's easily running all of the ram at pc 3000 per it's XMP profile while bumping the cpu to 3.7 so I can't really complain. The system benches great still, but those major reads and writes would've been done while using photoshop and premiere.

Hence my disappointment there really isn't any solution to my predicament.

I feel you. I only have two cards (no M.2, no PCIE ssd) and I can only get the cards to run at x8. Which means this board is going in the garbage. Or maybe I just send to MSI...god this is getting tedious. If I have to swap another board in this will be the third time within a month.

What GPU's are you using and how many?

When you try a single card which PCI-E slot is it in?

I have two r9 290x Lightnings. Single card did read at x16 originally. After installing the second card both went down to x8. Now, when I put it just back to a single card it still reads at x8. In Board Explorer (in BIOS) it gives me the "running at x8" status and then I confirm it through GPU-Z. Launch render test to kick the cards in and it stays at x8.

Ive heard from a few places that usb 3.0 turbo or 3.1 can affect pcie readings so I just assumed it was something else I could quickly test. Any chance multiple reboots will get this working? (I doubt it)

When you're trying a single card is it in one of the top two slots closest the CPU or the bottom two slots?

It does seem odd, on a 40 lane CPU both should run at 16x and on a 28 lane one at 16x and 1 at 8x

Any other PCI-E cards or just the two GPUs?

Yes, when I plug the single card in it is in the top gpu slot. And there are no other pcie devices, just the two gpu's. I have a third Lightning that I also tried as a single card and it also reads at x8. One of the main reasons I bought this cpu was to be able to run both at x16 in pcie 3.0 (my previous board only had x16 on 2.0) First I thought it might be a driver issue (when I was looking in gpu-z) but once I saw it consistently misreading in the BIOS I know its prob not a driver issue.

Have you tried switching to the backup BIOS to see if it's the same
Other than that a CPU seating issue (unlikely) or a duff board

I Am about to pull the trigger on the MSI X99A GAMING 9 ACK EATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard using the following

intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor

G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB HYBRID Video Card (2-Way SLI)

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB HYBRID Video Card (2-Way SLI)

anyone run a similar set up and can give me your experiences with this board, tips and such? have you used the built in streaming card feature?

Have you tried re-flashing the bios or jumping the bios to clear your settings. Are you running any overclocks currently, and can you post a picture of the configuration your cards are in. If a single card is only being read at 8 that seems a bit weird especially if you don't have any other devices using shared lanes. I don't have that motherboard but I know the lane distribution is slightly different on all of them.

I originally was considering this motherboard, I found this video review and just decided to re-purpose my other computer to stream.
