On what board? I know just about all MSI three & four way boards are wired 16x on 1 & 4

MSI PCI Table. It should be one of these in your box with your MoBo.. It's actually a small one on my board.

Yeah not on the X99A SLI Plus. Its the first and 3rd in order to get two cards at x16. I just learned this the hard way with swapping cards in and out all day, reflashing BIOSs, etc. Its the stupidest design Ive ever seen coming from a company who normally knows how to make design things sensibly

It depends how you look at it.
MSI's placement means you can run a 3 way in a mid tower, Asus's means if you wanted a 3 way you need to go for a full tower. I don't care which as I only plan to run 1 card smile.gif

Anyways we got there in the end...I mean would have been easier if I'd known the 2nd card was still inserted in the board but hey ho smile.gif

Anyways while I've been busy talking to DMatthewStewart all night I've been working on the USB problem on my X99A SLI Plus.

At first what I thought was an issue with the VIA controller...wasn't, I got the same hang on the Intel USB 3.0 controller and the Asmedia USB 3.1 controller. Interesting.

(What happens is you get a hang at post then a device isn't detected, unplugging and re-plugging the device or a full shutdown sorts it.)

So I have a Mini ITX I use with an Intel DH77DF motherboard (when intel actually made desktop boards smile.gif) so I figured I'd try it on there. Whoda thunkit, after installing the drivers for the device I rebooted and it hung as POST! And the device wasn't detected.

Uninstalled the intel XHCI drivers and tried again, no issues. Tried a second time to make sure and no issues. Reinstalled the latest 7 series chipset XHCI drivers, reinstalled the device drives and there's the hang at POST.

So well done logitech, you haven't updated your drivers since 2012 and it shows! smile.gif

What's odd is it didnt occur on my first motherboard that I swapped out for the solder blob. That's...strange.

SNIPPED

Yes, with this design you could prob run three-way in a mid-tower. But the amount of people running three way is very low. The amount of people running two-way is much higher. So the logic should be to not alienate a larger part of the market to cater to a smaller part. Thats just bad practice

And, I couldnt get a second card in. I have the two that are installed on the FC Terminal and I have one card that is stock with the air-cooler. I wouldve loved to be able to get a card in the first and 3rd slot today/tonight. But to do that I wouldve had to disassemble the FC Terminal, reinstall the regular terminal on one of the cards, drain my top mounted 480 rad, drain (at least partially) my bottom 240 rad, install a liquid cooled card in the top, measure, cut and install new hoses, and then pop the air-cooled card in slot 3 just to verify this. Im just going to order the Dual Serial and it will take me about 15 minutes total to get the cards installed onto it and plugged into the board and the loop (thank god I went with quick disconnects this time around...unfortunately it wont help me for a total reconfiguration)

The rest of that convo about it hanging on POST and the 3.0 USB and VIA, where was that from? That soudns awfully familiar but I cant peg the convo timeline or exactly what was going on. But Im mentioned...unless that was a typo. I know Ive either had that conversation, followed it, or read that.

oh you were only mentioned because i mentioned that I'd spent the night talking here about your issue while I was working on my own tongue.gif

Ah ok. Because I had a convo regarding usb 3.0 stuff and VIA not to long ago too. Just keeping my fingers crossed that slot 3 works as intended. I really dont want to pull another motherboard out again. I should know by Tuesday or Wednesday. All I wanted to do was get this system working properly so I can get my cpu oc'ed properly abd then work on other things. And its been one issue after another since November. Im sure this isnt anything and will be fine once I get the second card in slot 3. I did eventually want to get the Samsung 950 M.2 but I wanted to get my two cards running at x16 first.

Well this should be a lesson to you smile.gif

Always do your research first!

I read the manual for the X99A SLI Plus before I bought it so I knew exactly what everything was...except for the fact system fans won't go below 50% speed and the CPU fans can't control 3 pin fans -.- sigh.

But yeah, always make sure you know what's what with the board you are getting, the manual itself has an SLI configuration guide on the PCI-E page so...can't ever make assumptions with PC gear because you'll miss something important smile.gif

Warning about the MSI Krait x99A board and 2 way SLI:
If you use the slots that the manual suggest you use for 2 way SLI, you will 'kill' the upper card. The slots are too close, and the upper card will choke, it does NOT get enough air for normal usage. So I ended up using a lower slot then suggested, so both are running 8x, no matter what cards are used. Sadly this board is not a good boards for 2 way SLI. With my prior ASUS Maximus V Extreme Socket-1155E board, this was not a problem, the suggested slots could be used for 2 way SLI with good spacing.

Sadly these things is something you do not see until you are building the machine, so try to check reviews and ask on boards to get a suited mobo for your SLI config. Read my post history for this thread for more info on the issue I had if needed.
