Got my Asus X99-A II and a 5930k.

I only bought the CPU because the MSI motherboard wouldn't post and I want to rule out I never fried my CPU when I wracked my R5E. If my 5960x does work still I'll sell this CPU brand new in box. I'll lose maybe $100 but after two weeks of PC down time I wanted to be covered just in case.

Now finish my shift at work, get home at 10:30 p.m., test everything. drum.gif

Hello everyone. I am new to this site and about to embark on my first build. I have been doing a little research and have decided to go with the X99A XPower mobo. I had also planned on going with the 5930k CPU and dual GTX 1070's when they are available. This is where I'm not sure of myself as far as going with dual GPU's or a single more powerful card. Any help would be appreciated.

Will be a powerful beast of a machine, although is there any particular reason you are going with X99 over Skylake? x2 1070's will beat a single 1080, but you may have to contend with issues depending on what games you play. SLI has always been a finickity little mofo, but as long as you know what you're getting in to then all should be good.

I really don't, and that's part of the problem. I am trying to read and gather everything I need to know. I'm not set on 2 cards per say, I just want something that will not be slow. I am open to all suggestions as far as a machine. I don't play many games, but I want to be able to. I'm here for guidance so I don't look like a fool in front of my 10 year old that thinks I can do anything.

Then get a single 1080, the less chances of failure or troubleshooting the best, everytime I install a gpu update from nvidia every month I have to go through and re-enable sli, I have to do clean installs every time, there had been issues where if I wasn't running afterburner those updates would've fried my card, etc. A single point of failue is better than two.

I have dual 980ti's so you can take that with a grain of salt if need be.

I understand that completely. The 1080 is a very powerful card. My question then would be is the CPU/Mobo combination overkill? I plan on doing video editing also, and would like to be able to watch movies in 4K. Do I need to go with with the Godlike Gaming board for 4K?

The gaming godlike will not make editing better or easier. It just has a lot of features on it, you can do any of the x99 boards really, processor, memory, and storage are going to play a huge part in editing. The graphics card will help you on the 4k part.

Ok, I put a parts list together for my build, but this the kind of info I need. I had originally set aside $3500 including monitor/monitors, but I'm thinking I might not need that much. I mean, I'm sure I can use it, after all my wife boss has allocated it to me.
