Every now and then, the computer fails to POST, and reports: "All settings were reset to default values. The previous overclock settings have failed... etc etc."

Windows also occasionally fails to boot, and freezes on the loading screen (spinning dots).

These issues occur regardless of whether the PC is overclocked or not. Any idea on what may be the cause of this?

X99A MPower / 5820K / 4x8GB Kingston HyperX 2666MHz.
I used to have exactly what you had at the start, but never had it since I scaled back the OCs. I'm running nearly the same as you: X99A SLI Plus + 5820K + 32Gb HyperX..
I suggest 3 things:
(1) make sure your BIOS is up-to-date.
(2) re-seat your RAM
And then
(3) Reduce the OC, or increase stability of RAM and CPU. I previously ran much tighter OCs. I scaled back 100Mhz on the 5820K tot 4.4Ghz and run the timings on preset Hynix CL14 timings now. I personally suspect the RAM was the issue.

These are my settings:
Cpu Ratio: 44
Ring Ratio: 35
VCCin: 1.92
CPU Core: Offset +0.22V
CPU Ring: Offset +0.06V

RAM: Hynix DDR4-2666 CL14 preset from 'Memory Try It'

I don't know if this thread is still active but I'm seeking for some advice!

I have a MSI SLI PLUS X99A paired with a 6800k under a custom water loop.
I'm mad because the best OC I ever managed to achieve is 4.0 GHz on CPU and 3000 MHz on RAM (My RAM is rated for 3200 MHz).
The 6800k should be able to OC fairly easily to 4,3 GHz under water...
So my guess is my MB is the limiting factor here...

My settings are all default except :

Core ratio 40
Vcore 1.35v (it's so high for 4Ghz... only way to get it stable)
RAM speed manually set to 3000 MHz (XMP profile don't work)
RAM voltage 1.35v on both channels

Does somebody here managed to get a higher OC with same CPU/MB combo or with other Broadwell-E cpus?
I'm curious to know your settings!

Thanks!
It's likely the cpu 6800ks don't overock great. To get mine to 4400 I have to run one core at 4200 rest at 4400. I don't have your board but I do have a msi x99a gaming carbon.

Would you mind showing me your bios settings?

I haven't tried different frequencies on different cores. How did you selected which core to run at 4,2 GHz? The one failing running Prime95?
heres what i have right now still tweaking some to get 4400 on 5 cores 100% stable.

I just found a new issue with my board/cpu when i first got it i had problems running coretemp my screen would go off i formated but that didnt fix it but it was the only app had any problems stock or overclocked, i was just trying to run SiSoftware Sandra and just saw it do it again. I thought svid was causing it but just had it happen again when i opened coretemp. Can someone with a x99a gaming carbon open coretemp 1.7 and see if it causes your screen to go off and sometimes makes the pc reboot >? I have 5 days left to send back to newegg if something is not right i dont think its the board but im not really sure.

As a start try to set Vdroop to 75% or 95% and VCCin to 1.95V which both can help prevent voltage drops. Since your Vcore is so high, the cause is more likely to be something else.
I would also leave your RAM speed alone until you sort out the CPU, so you're only looking at 1 problem, not a combination of.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I can definitely say it was a bad cpu.
I just switched to a 6850k because I want to SLI.

Exact same MB (X99A SLI PLUS). I can easily OC to 4.4GHz with 1.35v and RAM on XMP profile at 3200mhz.

So yes, there is really bad cpus out there that have trouble oc over 4 ghz! It wasn't the MB's fault.
