What is the best thermal paste for the GPU? Is it still AS5? Or is it something else now....

Gelid GC-Extreme.

Innovation Cooling Diamond

However, it will act as a polishing compound and does "scratch" die surfaces.

Shin-Etsu X23-7783D is great too, but hard to find and expensive.

A pretty good thermal paste thats not too hard to find or isnt super exotic is Artic MX-2/MX-4.

Its on amazon and its a pretty good thermal paste. not the absolute best, but it is an improvement over as5, and is applied traditionally in a tube, so thats a plus.

people also like ic diamond, or whatever, its all preference, since the difference is a few degrees, I would look for one that doesnt degrade too much over time, or dries out quickly.

So re applying TIM on my 780 TI with some Gelid Extreme may lower my temps a bit from the stock TIM that is on now? Right now I idle at like 40-42C and load about 72-74. I would love to get those down somewhat...

those are high idle and load temps
is your card the reference design?
mine are atleast 10 degrees cooler but it's the non-reference design (acx model, twin fan cooler)
everything is 100% stock

You would lose about 4-5C. I'm using a Kraken G10. Idle is 24C, load temp is 41C. This is with a Corsair H55 cooler.

Hey, just thought I'd jump and and mention a new thermal paste I recently acquired - Halnziye HY880 - bought a massive 30 gram tube off Ebay british seller for about $15 delivered. Applied to both my CPU and GPU (i7 2600k water cooled & GTX660 accelero TT3 cooled) both have dropped in idle and load temps dramatically over AC5 and MX4, between 5 and 10 degrees each in most cases. Anyone else tried this stuff? There is one main review for it on google searches (http://www.pureoverclock.com/Review-detail/hy810-and-hy880-compound-review/) but other than that, not much info about it at all...
