The Fayd (Custom gaming rig, Budget: $700)

Component List (Click to show)
My first semi-professional build for an acquaintance. He wanted better quality than a pre-built rig would offer but was not confident in building his own, he gave me a budget of $700 and after a lot of research I feel like this rig is gonna knock it out of the park.

I will start snapping some pictures of the spread here shortly and begin build within the next day or so. Right off the bat I can say I'm very nervous about stress on the MoBo when shipping with the Hyper 212 and the beast of a 7870 on board. May have to lay the case flat and box everything up just to put my mind at ease wackosmiley.gif

If you haven't purchased the parts yet, I would recommend a different motherboard. That one is only 4+1 power phase. For the same price, you could have a board with 8+2. Would definitely help with overclocks, and a possible upgrade to an 8 core in the future.

or if it's too ugly, for a little more

Thanks for the suggestion, parts were already bought at time of OP, the blue MoBos you suggested didn't fit the requested color scheme by the client.

Goals of this build:

$700 budget before shipping. (Nailed it.)
Overall black base color with red accents
Able to handle most modern and future games without compromising too much on graphic quality.
Able to handle internet radio production live.
Mild overclock of CPU to improve functionality without compromising longevity. (4.2GHz 24/7 Stable)
Mild overclock of GPU for same reasons.
Serve as proof of concept for building in a more professional capacity on my part.

The computer is currently fully built awaiting O/S install, overclocking and stability testing. I will have pictures posted shortly, nothing crazy going on here.

A quick and dirty report on the good and bad I ran into for this system so far.

Things I liked:
  • Diamond HD 7870 is a beast and is very solidly built.
  • CM Hyper 212 EVO was more substantial and modular than expected. I see now why it is the standard for air cooling.
  • Corsair CX600 has fully sheathed cables. welcome sight in a non-modular PSU.
  • Tt Commander G42 has all the room in the world to work in and around.
  • Tt Commander G42 had a cutout on Mobo tray specifically to route top-mounted cables such as CPU power. Awesome.
  • Tt Commander G42 has expanded side panels allowing for plenty of room to tuck cables and install tall heat sinks.

Things I didn't like:
Tt Commander G42:
  • Two pre-installed fans are same model number but obviously not the same fan, different turbine style and Blue LEDs on rear fan resulted in both fans being pulled.
  • Single 120mm Fan mount on front of case, no options for additional fans, fan mount is a drilled & tapped HDD cage with proprietary bolts. Modular drive cage has no such mounting. Would prefer to see separate mounting plate allowing 2x120mm/2x140mm/1x200mm
  • No grommet surrounding cable cutouts.
  • 5.25" bay locks had no positive engagement. Was difficult to tell if the DVD drive was locked in.
CM SickleFlow 120mm Red LED
  • Provided Molex adapters were a royal pain in the ass to connect to PSU. Pins were all over the place inside the plug and out of spec in size.
  • Provided mounting screws are silver. The fan is black, a large percentage of case mounting points are black, just.....give me black screws.
  • Wiring is clear sheathed with a brown plug on a black fan. My OCD is haywire right now.
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
  • PCIe clip system is obscure. I may or may not have broken one of the clips trying to mount the GPU. Can't really ding ASRock, it was a RTFM moment for me.
  • USB3.0 header is on the rear of the board near the I/O panel, for a cable that routes to the front of the case....why?
  • One, uno, ein, hana, PWM header. Granted I didn't make a large use of PWM fans during this build but at least one more 4-pin header to accommodate a PWM Push/Pull setup on the 212 EVO would have been nice.
Kingwin CCLT-12RD
  • The box declares this tube "Red" in color. I call it closer to Pink. A lot closer.
  • PCI plate-mounted switch was a nice touch, however the plate itself is out of spec and not rigid in any sense of the word, resulting in the plate bowing in when screwed down.
  • Provided foam double-sided tape has very weak adhesive.

More updates soon.

I'm sure that board will serve you and the client well. Let of great reviews, only con mentioned quite a bit was the USB header as you have noticed.

Glad everything went together smoothly. Post back with pics and oc results when you have it all done. Congrats!

Image Spread (Click to show)
The mandatory spread of boxes.

Let's get after it, Mounting components to mobo before installation to case, RTFM mode on the Hyper 212 EVO as this is my first time dealing with a tower Rad.

Warning sticker on the back of board, that's a nice touch.

CPU mounted, lab assistant checks in to make sure all is well before AS5 goes on.

So here I'm installing the A/C condenser cooler salvaged from my Dodge Ram...s'what it feels like anyway.

Ballistix mounted, board's ready to hit the case.

Seems small in here, lonely even. Let's fix that.

Swapping out stock fans for CM SickleFlo, wife is surely impressed by my screwdriver prowess.

Just throw it all in there and figure it out later.

Everything loosely wired, Lighting check.

Fuel stop.

Let's start tackling this mess.

Moved HDD to modular drive cage and re-installed to get it out of the way of front intake fan.

Zipping down the last bundle. Peep that fresh mop chop.

A little paint? First time trying it.

Here's the picture spread of the build process itself. Windows 7 installed, Overclocking tonight and stability testing starts tomorrow. I'll be talking to an artist friend to get a custom wallpaper to surprise the client with, to match the theme of the build.

4.3 GHz on the FX-6300 was easy sauce, the Hyper 212 EVO isn't impressed with me, full load one hour into torture test and temp was pegged 13 degrees over case ambient at 45

He simply set the budget and let me decide, being on the other end of the country I elected to go with new parts as I would not be able to troubleshoot effectively beyond the weekend of stress testing I did. The HD7870 fit within the price bracket I was looking at and reviewed well. Unigene Valley maxed out gave acceptable results during the benchmark.

Computer's off to it's owner now. Good lord shipping these things is ****ty on cost.
Final spread...

Here's some shots of the accent work
Front panel

Side panel, had a minor oops on the tape on the top forward corner. Customer's fine with it even though I'm not.

Side panel (left the protective film on for transit) With lights

Lighting check, side panel off.

Lights off, final layout.

Under AMD Overdrive the FX-6300 survived a 12-hour stability test at 1.3v 4.3 GHz. I left it there as 1.3v seemed like a healthy number to send it off with to a guy who didn't know what time zone to set his overclock in. rolleyes.gif
Temp pegged in the upper 30s during the length of the test, Hyper 212 EVO with AS5.

I chose not to Overclock the GPU as it was already factory overclocked and Unigene Valley had the temperature spiking into the upper 70s while maxed out at 45 FPS. Good enough for me.

This was fun to do as a first build and I attempted a lot of thing's I've never done before to good results. On to the next one! thumb.gif
