Games with pre-rendered backgrounds should make a comeback. REHD is simply beautiful.

With today's real time graphics (Unreal Engine 4, CryEngine 3, 4A engine, even Unreal Engine 3), I don't see any need for pre-rendered backgrounds. Besides, pre-rendered games have been making an unfortunate comeback over the last few years, particularly in the indie scene, and boy am I tired of 2.5D RPGs. It's not 1998 anymore. rolleyes.gif

You are implying that games are currently able to deliver the visual fidelity that would make a pre-rendered vision unnecessary. The polygon count just isn't there. The actual games have a really hard time consistently looking as good as the demos they make for those engines.

Oh, I got it now... you just hate pre-rendered. Well, not every game has to be full poligons, certainly not every INDIE game wants to look like AAA titles with the fanciest lighting and 'realistic' textures.

Real time graphics do deliver such visual fidelity. Look at Metro: Last Light, Crysis 3, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. The polygon count is there, take a close look at the objects in those games. Tessellation and photoscanning work wonders. Crysis 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition just need better anti-aliasing but that's a relatively easy fix (force enough downsampling and it will go away lol). Those games all come closer to photorealism than any pre-rendered game, and note that I'm speaking only of pre-rendered games that are meant to look realistic.

When you have pre-rendered games attempting to look 3D and realistic, that's when I roll my eyes. This game is an exception since it's a remake that's not scratch made. I understand that there are other indie pre-rendered games with strange art styles that wouldn't benefit from being 3D, and that's fine. But imitating 3D when trying to achieve a realistic look makes little sense.
