What You Think Of This HTPC Build?

Thread Starter
So I decided to build a HTPC for a friend of mine. Yes I have a friend. biggrin.gif
I have some pair parts laying around. Remember this only for surfing the net and playing movies(DVD and Netflix).

This is what I have in the build so far and with future upgrades too.

CPU: Phenom 1 9500 (2.2ghz Quad)
Mobo : AsRock A785GMH/128M
Video : On-Board AMD Radeon 4200 or 4250 @ 512mb memory used.
Ram : 4ghz DDR2 667
Rom : Lite-on DVD Burner
HDD : WD 500gb
PSU : Generic 300 watt from Gateway thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
Case : nMEDIAPC Red Wood Wood/Steel HTPC 8000 ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Now for future upgrade part.

CPU : Phenom II x2 550 that unlocks to 3 cores
Mobo : MSI 770-G45
Video : AMD Radeon HD4350 512mb
RAM : 4 GB DDR3 1333
SSD : G.Skill 120gb SATA II
HDD : 2TB Samsung Green
PSU : Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green

The PSU will be the first thing I replace. I'm not 100% sure about the mobo/ram/video. Still thinking about those.
It can surfing the net and playing movies(DVD and Netflix) now.
So you think I should only upgrade the SSD/HDD/PSU or The full upgrade when I can the parts for it?

lol'd at this.

I would agree that the power supply needs to go, but if you slap an SSD in there as the first upgrade/replacement, everything else will just be an afterthought.

+1 totally forgot about that

I remember slapping a 64gb SSD in my mothers aging laptop (all she needed) and it brought new life to it. Same with low end, low budget hardware.

I wouldn't bother changing out the main components, especially not to replace a quad-core Phenom I for a tri-core Phenom II. For an HTPC, that's a sidegrade at best. You can run an HTPC off a Jaguar-based Athlon quad that's about even with that Phenom.

I like the retro case, though. thumb.gif
