Volume control issue with Microsoft Sidewinder X4 keyboard

I bought this keyboard over a year ago, and for as long as I can remember there was an *occasional* issue with the volume control buttons-sometimes there would be a lag between my pressing the buttons and the volume changing, probably about 10 or 20 seconds so long enough to be very annoying but not that big of a deal.

I recently bought a new SSD, so I started from scratch with Windows. I now have a lot less crapware etc wasting resources (my previous installation was 2yo so quite bloated). But now the volume control buttons (and the mute button) don't do anything whatsoever.

Windows, MSE and the keyboard driver are all up-to-date, I have checked that the buttons are enabled in "Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center", and every other button on the keyboard works exactly as it should.

Any ideas?

I'm noticing this too, but after an upgrade from an X-Fi to a Z.
And yes, all the other buttons work too (home/search/mail, calculator, etc) - so I believe it's probably deliberate behavior after the Creative driver install.

I'm doing typical Google-fu of course (and looking through the massive SB Z thread) to see if it's specific to the Z.

I tried plugging it into a different port, now none of the media keys work

I also uninstalled and reinstalled MS Mouse and Keyboard Center, no luck.

Tried disabling my Creative sound card, the media keys still don't work. Also now I can't re-enable it

EDIT: Reinstalled the drivers and the card works again, media keys still not working on the keyboard though
