iPhone 6 review, hot off the press!

There is explosive demand for bigger smartphones. A 4-inch smartphone feels small now; somewhere around 5 inches is the new normal. Yet too many large-screen phones are cumbersome, awkward, and often just plain bad. And Apple has a long history of taking good ideas with obviously huge markets, and being the first manufacturer to really nail the execution.

Add those three things together, and this phone on my desk isn't at all surprising. It's the iPhone 6, a bigger, brighter, badder iPhone designed to appeal to the customers for whom the iPhone 5S and its 4-inch screen now seem adorably antiquated. (Which is basically everybody.) It starts at $199 on a two-year contract, and comes in silver, gold, and space gray. It's full of new technology and crafted from a new mold. Apple intends for it to be the new standard in a new type of smartphone, to be the big-screen phone that anyone can handle. Not the first big phone, but the best. The big phone for everyone.

Of course, Samsung, HTC, and others have been making big phones too, and they have years of iteration and millions of sales to show for it. This is Cupertino's steepest climb yet: can it leapfrog the entrenched competition and prove that Apple can do better?

The big iPhone has a big job to do.

We should note right now that this review is specifically for the iPhone 6; we'll have the iPhone 6 Plus review up in the next day or two. At this point, it's not really possible to revolutionize the smartphone, and on the surface, the iPhone 6 seems to be directly inspired by the iPod Touch. However, instead of the chamfered edge where the display meets the metal unibody we see a continuous curve from the sloping glass to the metal unibody that looks and feels great. While the M8 was one of the best phones for in-hand feel, the iPhone 6 goes a step further due to the reduced weight and rounded side. I've always felt like the HTC 8X had one of the most compelling shapes for a phone, and the incredibly thin feel of the iPhone 6 definitely reminds me of that.

While we've also written about the iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 Plus needs its own review in order to really understand the various features of the device that would otherwise be buried in the context of the iPhone 6. Without question, this device represents a significant departure from the way Apple has competed in the smartphone space. For as long as I can remember, Apple hasn't competed in the phablet space, and also avoided competing with Galaxy Note line that has been established as the dominant phablet for the past 3-4 generations. As a result, Apple occupies a fast-follower position at best.

Been waiting for these..

For those mildly interested:

"THE IPHONE 6 IS THE BIG IPHONE FOR EVERYONE"

"THE IPHONE 6 DOESN'T FEEL LIKE A GADGET"

"YOU WON'T NOTICE MOST OF THE INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS, BUT THEY HELP"

"SERIOUSLY: SHOOT SLOW-MOTION VIDEO"

"IOS 7 WAS CRAZY AND NEW - IOS 8 MATURES IT"

9/10 - nice display, good camera, a few crappy aesthetic qualities

Yay.

1GB of RAM.
1GB of RAM.
1GB of RAM.

I'm sorry, I just can't get past this point. I've been an Apple fan my whole life and I've had 3 iPhones, but holy crap. Apple has totally earned their reputation for doing as little as they can possibly get away with while charging as much as they can get away with.

1GB of RAM for their flagship phone with a 2,000,000 pixel display. Unbelievable. Petty. Pathetic.

Skip to the end of the video review and the apple praising goes away and the reviewer states what everyone is thinking: iphone 6 is just another iphone, bigger, slightly better, but playing a catchup game, everyone wanted more but they got exactly what was expected, a rehashed iphone.

I have no issues with apple or most of their devices, I dont own any of their products, but i have gotten them for family members. It is just really disappointing to see a company that has so much money and power be so afraid to make changes to their core product. Look at the mac pro line, one of the more neglected product lines, it was laughed at by some people, but it was new, innovative, and very well done despite some flaws.

Apple could do more.

Steve Jobs could do more. Now Apple is just parasitizing off Samsung. I'm surprised the new iPhone isn't waterproof.

How is the battery subpar and what are you comparing it to?

The screen isn't subpar... the pixel density is lower than most, but other than that every other aspect of it is improved. Have you seen any thorough comparisons to high end droids in this regard? If you have, please link me.

Seems like it didn't matter in the review. As hardware enthusiasts it may be a big deal, but from a usability stand point, if 1GB works then eh.

Keep in mind the platform is so closed down that 1GB of ram goes a LONG way compared to what software is allowed to consume on more open platforms. I'm sure more was tested and they probably arrived at the conclusion that they'd rather not power another piece of silicon unless there was going to be a tangible benefit.

This^

I purchased a Galaxy s5 thinking I'd give Android another try. Felt just as slow and buggy as they always have even though the specs are better. Battery life was also terrible unless I manually tried to manage it. Gave that to my kid and got a 5s. I don't really game or take pics, I just need it to be fast and work, that has always been Apple. I also only need to charge the phone every 2-3 days now. The dang Galaxy would loose 30% by lunch time WITHOUT me using the freaking thing???? Samsung specs with Apple software would be great, until then I'll chose the software.

iOS is supported on the 4S and up. In any case larger screen and better camera is still a win =D

It IS a good phone, get over it people. People complain about the RAM and yet fail to realize they are comparing it to the Android Ecosystem. You can't compare Android phones with iPhones spec per spec since they are two different system. Same purpose? Yes. Same process? No. I for one recognize the good points of the new iPhone. That is, if you could overlook the price
