Progress! biggrin.gif

I haven't updated in a bit because I was sick for a week, then just normal life stuff. I'm hoping to get really rolling soon. I'm pretty much done modifying the case so all thats left is to take the case apart, paint, reassemble then start putting the build in.

One of the things needing modification was somewhere to mount the pump/res combo being it sat slightly too tall and hit some tubing above it. Now I know I could have simply gone with the 150ml bitspower res, but the 250ml just looks so sexy reaching to the top I had to try and figure out a way to make it happen. smile.gif

What I wound up doing is simply cutting a hole through the midplate so the pump could sit lower then making an aluminum bracket to sit the pump/res combo onto. I used the stock rivet holes but made the bracket threaded to hold both together. It turned out pretty well. Hopefully the painting can start this coming week. thumb.gif

Here are some pictures of the slight progress made so far.

Still a little tight at the top, but everything fits.

Getting so close to the pretty bits I can feel it. biggrin.gif

OK boys and girls this thing is still going. biggrin.gif I've been working on prettifying some things and have received some of them back.

First thing is the motherboard block. Now the countersinking of the screws on the stainless plate was only the first step for what the final goal would be. Now my other blocks are nickel plated so the motherboard block was a little out of place. So after some vigorous stainless polishing and getting the copper bits dipped in nickel we have the z77x-up7 motherboard block XSPC should have built, To quote another member with some interesting builds, "BAM"

Oooh yeah... I like shiny. biggrin.gif Was a bit or work polishing, but really happy with the outcome.

Now I had to even out things a bit, so the Corsair dominator ram got some love as well.

These were a little more work as the top part of the Corsair PLatinums I have are an anodized cast aluminum. Very brittle and hard to work with. For these I sent them out to get the anodized coating taken off then had them nickel coated.
Me likes the shiny. tongue.gif

Here are some random pictures of everything mounted on the board just to get a bit of a feel. Dont mind all these pictures they were taken on my phone as I was in a hurry. Proper photoshoot should come after I start getting some more bits back. thumb.gif

I also managed to tear down the case in preparation for paint. thumb.gif

Unfortunately we also have a casualty in the build... unfortunately the bitspower ddc top is no more. After a small accident another will have to be sourced.

Hopefullly there will be at least weekly updates as this perticular build is taking a little longer than expected. Stay tuned though things should get interesting. wink.gif

Thanks, its taken a bit to get this far. thumb.gif

One thing that is bothering me right now is the nickel ek supremacy cpu block screws. They are not a very shiny nickel and the color of them is slightly off. I figure I have 2 options there. See if I can get them stripped polished and nickel (or chrome) plated, or paint them a nice satin black......... hmmm. Stumped on that one. Might have to find a way to visualize it. redface.gif

Yep...the EK thumb screws do have a bit of a crude finish when compared chrome & nickle. Mine are the same way although they look a lot better next to black chrome or black sparkle fittings

Yeah Im going to have to see how cost effective it will be to make em match. Might try a quick black on them to see how it looks though. We'll see though. biggrin.gif

OK, so I've run into a bit of a dilemma, The "nickel" plated thumbscrews on the Supremacy cpu block dont really match the rest of the pieces even after some slight polishing. I'm down to the point where I think I will either have them stripped and replated in Nickel locally or simply paint them a satin black.

Ive taken a few pictures to see if you guys get the same impression as to which way I should go. biggrin.gif

Nickel:

Black:

Now out of the 2 choices I mentioned earlier, which are a good nickel plating to match or a painting satin black I am leaning towards one direction. smile.gif

Here are a couple more pictures:

If anyone noticed in those pictures the cpu block looked a little differently. I decided to partially paint parts of it in a satin black. The reason for this is actually two, the first one being that I plan on adding leds to the blocks and wanted to control the amount of light. I want the blocks to more or less glow rather then beam light all over and I believe this will help. The second reason is that I'm "planning" on using a colored fluid and wanted to be able to see it some through the blocks.

Not my best work, but came out pretty decent I think.

Well thats it for now, hope to have some good news by next weekend. biggrin.gif

WOW! How have I missed this??? It is looking GREAT! Excellent job on the motherboard block. I really dig it.

The only thing I don't like is the CPU block. I think you should leave it clear and polish it to match the GPU block. I don't like the paint on it. Just my opinion. Another suggestion would be to get a solid black CPU block and matching GPU blocks. Extra work because you have to sell current blocks but that would look REALLY good.

Again, just some suggestions!

@sinnedone Either looks pretty darn awesome from those pics cause I can't tell how off the finish of thumbscrews really are, however I know that in person things aren't always as they appear in photos. Painted black really make the fittings "pop" a little more. biggrin.gif

I think he was referring to painting the thumbscrews...not the plexi block itself. Unless I'm missing something?

Oh...I see the black border on the block now. I think it looks good too though. smile.gif

Thank you bud. thumb.gif I actually have this idea in my head about how I want things to look, and while I'm not sold on the paint on the cpu block just yet I need to do a couple of things before I can decide on it. You see I'm planning on running colored fluid in the system and leds in the blocks to get a certain effect. Regular acetal/nickel while looking good and me personally liking the fact the block runs the full length of the card will not allow this idea I have to work out with the lighting. I need to get some fluid/dye to fill the block and add the leds to take some pictures of it to see if it actually looks the way I envision.

Yeah the pictures don't really capture the color difference. If you look at the pictures previously posted in the thread pointing out the difference in nickel plating between the ek (yellowish) and monsoon/bitspower fittings you can get a better idea of what it looks like under good conditions. I know its not alot, but being its the centerpiece of the build and me being excessively anal about things it will bother the crap out of me. lol.

The cpu block I'm a little on the fence right now. I kinda like the way it looks being that its different and will (hopefully) provide a lighting/fluid effect I'm looking for, but for the time being looks odd as well. Guess its just the fact its completely different from the norm, which can be good sometimes.

I also posted some pictures of the ek thumbscrews in the water cooling thread to get more feedback, but here are my personal opinions on it.

Nickel, It will look nice matching the rest of the pieces. That being said I think I might be leaning towards the black simply because sometimes "less is more". I dont want it to get to the point where there is so much nickel/polished/chrome that its just too much and looks like a car with too many chrome Pep Boys sticky fender vents/emblems etc. tongue.gif
