They also like to charge a $100 installation fee if you don't get TV service. madsmiley.png

Then they charge a rental fee for a router they force on you which isn't that bad except that you can't choose between model types and the ones they auto-provide have very limited abilities. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

All in all though as much crap as ATT gets, they are a decent company to me. I have had almost no issues with them and good service.
Sure the download speeds could be better and the upload speeds are atrocious but it's still a lot better than most people can get.

You figure out how to cram 120 Mb/s through 30 year old copper phone lines and I will gladly get AT&T again. Max throughput at my house is 6/1 on U Verse because the lines are so old. Comcast is my only other option, unfortunately. CC completely lives up to "worst company ever" down here in S florida. their CSR's are horrible for residential service, but awesome for Business class. I have both but I own my modems and I rewired the house myself with hi end RG6 with no splitters anywhere and even ran a new drop to the pole so I have the best possible signal quality and will never need to call a tech unless the set top box dies and in that case I would just drive it down to the CC office and get it replaced. The only way to get around the BS "bundle" package is to get the right CSR on the phone. (I have an inside track to one so I don't get raped like most customers do) Who the hell even uses a landline anymore. It's just a beacon for telemarketers anyways. I have 120/30 biz class inet and it's more than enough for me and the kids. I have the $100 a month TV package with 800 channels of crap for the kids. It's 250 a month total but I get to write off the
Inet so it works for me. If it didn't rain every day in Florida i would have Dish for TV instead of CC for a savings of 50%.

I had to recently go to Business class due to their cap, I hope some kind of change happens for the good out of all this. I had a battle with their customer service department before finally removing all my residential services(Triple Play Bundle) and going straight business class internet only. I had their 105/20 package with some random triple play package, the lowest one I could find with 105 internet since apparently they don't offer 105 internet without a bundle. Within 3 weeks of the upgrade to this higher package I noticed my internet usage meter was back and showing a 300GB cap with the 3 overage month "allowances". That was the start of the feud but I let that go after realizing it was an apparent coincidence that they added the cap back in my area(Knoxville/Oak Ridge/Clinton, TN, etc) in the same month I upgraded.

My next battle started last month when I got about 4 or 5 emails in one night while at work saying I was over the 300 GB limit and had been allotted 50GB extra and one of my 3 "allowances" had been used. After reading the rest of the emails, the same thing was repeated 3 or 4 times but each one saying an extra 50GB and another allowance had been used and I was over my 3 for the year and was now being charged the $10 per 50GB. Mind you, this was less than 4 days into the month when the meter resets so I was baffled how and why this had happened. The large bandwidth usage was crazy enough but how the allowances work is even crazier.

I had to wait till I got home to see what was going on as I had forgot to run TeamViewer before leaving for work as I usually do. I got home and looked at my WhatPulse stats to try to figure out what was going on and to verify how much bandwidth I had used. Sure enough, I was way over. I had somehow burned through over 1TB in less than 4 days into the month and more specifically almost 3/4 of it in one day. I opened up processor explorer(SysInternals Suite) to see if anything was still using bandwidth and found Steam hammering away at my download speed of around 14.2MB/Sec(I get great speeds with Comcast, almost 20Mbps over what I pay for). Steam was open but was showing nothing currently downloading inside the client. I shut it down and the bandwidth stopped. I tried to reopen Steam to see if I could figure out what the problem was but it said it couldn't find the executable. I opened windows explorer and one of my Raid arrays had dropped for whatever reason and it just happened to be the one with the Steam client on it along with a little less than half of my game collection, around 70 games of my total 151. Steam took it upon itself to start downloading those 70 games to one of my other arrays that had a steam library on it but was dumping the data as soon as it was finished downloading. So basically it was downloading all the "missing" games to the "Downloading" folder in a steam library folder but deleting them as soon as it was finished. I restarted the computer and the array was back up and Steam and all the games were back in place and working perfect.

I was mad but it wasn't Comcast's fault for Steam's bug and my leaving the client running. I figured I had lost one of my allowances for that year and learned a lesson. I was shocked to find that for every 50GB I went over, it took one of the allowances. I was under the impression the allowances allowed a pretty much unlimited overage for that month. I was wrong. They had charged me $10 for every 50GB I had went over after 450GB. That is the 300GB cap, and three 50GB allowances totaling 450GB "free". So $10 x ~13-15(Can't remember the exact number) of their 50GB overages was added to my bill. To make this long story a bit shorter, I'll just say I went through hell with Comcast's CS department before finally giving up after 3-4 hours of debate, elevate, debate, get cut off, call again, debate, etc. I dumped the residential all together and went straight 100/25 business for $10 less(got a great promo after explaining my ordeal) than what I was paying for the triple play that I didn't really use anyway. The residential tried to get me to not terminate by offering my a $50 pre-paid card for my "troubles" and still pay the full bill. I will stay with business unless something better comes along.

It is my understanding that they are going to, are already have changed the allowance program to work the other way around. So that one huge month will only take 1 allowance and not 1 per 50GB like my ordeal. I realize it wasn't their fault but they could have handled this in a much better way. I wasn't hostile or aggressive when talking with CS. I was calm and extremely nice considering the circumstances. I'm happy it happened though, it opened my eyes to business class services. My only regret is It's still Comcast that I am giving my money to, though their business class seems much more deserving. I'm treated like royalty compared to residential. Wow, this ended up as a long post. Sorry, but I had to vent and possibly inform others of the allowance/cap program and what to expect. Overall Comcast has been great, if not a little overpriced, for the ~10 years I have dealt with them so I can't complain all that much. I do not think they deserve the brunt of the hate they get but some of it is deserving.

Make's me laugh that you all complain about how bad you've got it. Where as in Cyprus (my parents live there) there is only one coms company (mobile, telephone, internet etc). They charge what they like, turn off the lines randomly without telling you, change prices and tarrifs without notifying you. Their customer service is terrible becauser they just dont care, you want internet you have to use them, no choice. Same goes for the Power company (Elec/Gas).
The Cypriot goverment are so corrupt they wont let any other companies in unless the pay a ridiculous premium to start up (basically a bribe) and then pay a percentage of profits per year on top of the taxes. (The current company doesn't)

The Coms company is called Cytanet for those that are interested btw.

At least you lot have some version of choice, even if they're not great there is a bit of competativness to keep the prices reasonable.

TWC in my area is running on 30-40 year old infrastructure, but still charging a premium price. I have no questions as to why Comcast wants them.

We have choice for utilities, and some limited choice for mobile because the coverage networks are not at parity with what and whom they cover so you usually get coverage for signal where you need it most. But more on point with this article, you do not have much choice at all with internet, because the government usually rejects other companies building competing infrastructure, you generally have one choice for true internet providers and they can and do screw with the customer. So you seem to be falling into believing the press releases Comcast is putting out, with all that "competition" they have, buying TWC shouldn't be able to effect the market at all.

The ultimate irony, or sad joke of all of this is Comcast is right, they don't compete with TWC, because the government (FCC) pretty much dictates that no cable competition can exist and the companies previously colluded for their oligopoly territorial limits. They aren't competing, they are laughing their way to the highest profitability of any company in this country by screwing their customers who have no choice.

I'm kind of hoping google's fiber optic crap will swoop in soon and put all these sorry excuses for ISP's out of business.

Man I was having such a good day at work until I had to see this title hit the homepage again.

My eyes just can't roll hard enough to cause bodily harm to those at Comcast making these statements.

Unless it puts ALL other ISP's out of business. That would be bad.
Let's hope it causes the major ISP's right now to step their game up in competition.

Right now they have none as they all work as a mob with sanctioned territories to eliminate 90% of the competition.
