Heard Windows 9 is a free download to all who purchased Windows 8.

Downloaded Windows 8 Professional back in October 2012 for $39.99, then they upgraded me to Win 8.1 Pro for free, now Win 9.0 again for free, that $39.99 is going a long long way.

Looking forward to this. I (I know I am a minority) have enjoyed every newer version of windows more than the previous, save WindowsME, going back to 3.1 which was on my first PC.

Edit: I even liked Vista.

As much as I like Windows, I would become a Linux enthusiast in a heartbeat.

I keep seeing the odd rumour that Windows may adopt the F2P model, so Pay to win? as long as Direct X 12 isnt some $100 DLC we should be fine

I got 2 copies for $14.99 each. Best deal I ever make for the decade.

Yeah, I've seen enough rumors that I'm a little worried about it. Also, it's clearly the direction they want to go with Microsoft Office. They did it with Office and it made me jump ship completely to LibreOffice. If they do it with Windows, I'll stay with Windows 7 for gaming but use Linux for everything else (and hopefully, SteamOS/Linux will eventually be viable for gaming in that scenario).

Considering the above, upgrading to Windows 9 for free but with a yearly fee attached would be a big no for most people.
I hope that is not true if it will have a sub free. That means you never owned the software at your place.

I've been waiting the entire day now (it's 18:38 here).

I'm definitely going to put the beta on a vm to see what it's like. And I'll probably do the same for the next beta(s).

I like Win8/8.1, and if that happens I'll do with 9 what so many others did with 8/8.1. Same if it's dependant on cloud services. If it won't work offline, then I don't want it (besides, we have 2Mbps on paper, and rarely get 1Mbps).

I dont think they can change a paid software into subscription base after Microsoft had sold them.

It is like skyrim suddenly become sub. That is ridiculous lol

They can silently roll out a patch, but it won't be very smart. Just imagine the reaction they'll get.

Yeah, no matter how good Win9 ends up being, I have a hard time imagining myself paying a monthly fee to keep using Windows. It's the same reason I won't pay for Adobe CC, or lease a car. You pay less, but you never actually own anything.

It'd be tricky finding a replacement OS though, because literally every other operating system is stuck in the past. Windows 8 is the only one that draws inspiration from new technology.
