In sync with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' mantra, global chip maker AMD today said games developed in the country can play an important role in the growth of the nascent gaming industry.
Games inspired by the rich cultural heritage here can play an important role in the growth of the nascent gaming industry in India," AMD chief gaming scientist Richard Huddy told PTI.
The console gaming market in India is currently estimated at Rs. 840 billion. The study estimates serious gamers to comprise 15-20 per cent of the total gaming universe in the country.
First an article on The Hindu and then a post on their India Facebook page confirmed that AMD is asserting for game development in India for the Indian markets. First their APUs named after Indian rivers and mythical figures then the hype for re-launch of already available products for India and now this. It seems they see a real big opportunity in the Indian market
Big opportunity here for AMD to neutralize the loss (loss of profits) in American and European markets.
It'd be great to see an open world RPG/RTS and such games based on the dense, colorful and heavily diverse cities like Delhi and Mumbai!
I think that wasn't exactly what the article meant. Just the story, gameplay and the world inspired by the locale. Those 'Made in India' games (if ever they're made) may have Hindi as an option too like we have options for german spanish etc. in many games developed in Europe and Americass
I would welcome any new gaming market that wasnt dominated by scummy corporations like EA and activision and ubisoft. New blood that wasnt tainted by the corporate mediocrity being spewed out currently.

Separate games from inferior mediums pwease! Good news nontheless. Would rather play an iOS casual game hanging by the neck from a pole than play a Bollywood FPS.

This is a very good point. Some of my favorite games of all time (S.T.A.L.K.E.R series and Metro 2033 series) were developed by Ukrainian studios. They felt so unique and gritty, you could tell they came from a developer who cared for their work and it wasn't just another cookie cutter game like a lot of the crap big box studios had been putting out.

Only problem is India doesn't really hold to the same demographic likes as the US/Europe, as can be evidenced if you watch anything from Bollywood. What they like is very different from what we like. So games from India unless they go through a large amount of localization probably won't appeal outside of Asia.

Yes, I'm from India. Not as big as movies, but yes. Its a more hero focused culture like Japan so a character driven game will be enjoyed even if its bad. That's why I say Indian games devs should refrain from using movie-star tropes since it'll allow them to pass a bad game as acceptable. Anyway, people do pirate a lot, but a whole lot if because games are looked upon as a children's activity. But people are beginning to open their eyes and buying the insanely cheap regionally priced games. I got a Rome 2 :TW for the equivalent of $8 lol.

This. Elders think a person who grows up to a certain age must accept his responsibilities. Moreover, lack of a local medium that promotes such activities more, and availability or lack thereof of better infrastructure have limited peoples access.
