I want an AV with an active firewall so I don't have to scan quite as regularly. And active firewall with most of these means upgrading to their full suite.

It's no more insecure than any other software firewall. Any software firewall is only as secure as the person in the drivers seat.

thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif You need a good anti-rootkit and anti-malware these days, which thankfully are free, or at least partially included in full antivirus suites. Malware and grayware garbage is frickin' everywhere these days. An AV alone doesn't cut it.

Thankfully I don't see a huge amount of intrusion these days, so firewalls aren't such a big deal, but they don't hurt unless you absolutely need that 4 MB of RAM space.

Any suggestions on something good? I tried comodo, but I got rid of it, don't recall why, I think it was blocking something it shouldn't have been. I just don'y trust the Windows Security Essentials, which is built into Windows Defender as of 8.. I saw an article about it being the only tested security software to outright fail certification.

I personally use Kaspersky for AV, which is actually a bit overkill for my needs but I got it free from work. Used to use Bitdefender Free before that though and that was great, and relatively unintrusive. For malware I use Malwarebytes and for rootkits I use TDSS Killer. Between the 3 and knowing which Program Files/Program Data/AppData folders to delete (and common sense in general, which folks seem to have here in spades biggrin.gif ), it keeps my system pretty clean.

Currently without non-Windows firewall, but am planning to install one on my server once that's up and running so I can just guard the whole domain (wife and brother-in-law share my network.)

And yes, Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials is crap. It's so bad even Microsoft recommends using a third party AV. But that's probably just so they can remain buddy-buddy with the AV manufacturers.

So. I thought XP was really good, but it is looks very dated at this point. Vista was good once patched, and Windows 7 just felt like Windows Vista with a lot more polish to make it dang near perfect. I liked the new task manager in Windows 8, as well as the file transfer box because they were so much more accurate and usable. Also, the boot time was great. I just didn't like the no start menu thing.

So... On my computer, I have a 3 TB hard drive, and a second 1 TB hd. SHould I clear out my second hard drive to check this out, or should I wait until a later date?
