Not all Windows 7 or even 8(.1) works but depends on what the application is trying to access. MSI Intel Tuning Utility didn't work until MSI released the updated version. But that is the only program I've found that doesn't work - aside from drivers of course.

Is Directx 12 going to be benefited by hyper-threading or can I just upgrade to a core i5 skylake and be fine? currently have i5=2500k and though there isnt much of a benefit... still... would like to have those small number of games that benefit from it like guild wars 2

Has this been covered in this thread yet? I'm sure it has, its 624 pages. This whole thing reeks of government spying and corporate spying. I'm NEVER upgrading to windows 10. Never. Windows 7 is just fine for me. Sure they can spy on my old OS, but at least its not their super streamlined, new and improved, latest and greatest technology for doing so. With 7, I can at least still have some control over it. And, maybe you can with 10 as well, once all the hack tools and other such "customization" programs come out.

But this is microsoft we're talking about here. Treating the customer like they don't matter is their mantra. These are the people that wrongly sued many of their own customers for piracy, got proven wrong, and then were counter sued by the customers. Thus prompting government action against them. This is microsoft, people. They don't give things away for free. That's all well known by now, you say? Well what if I'd rather pay $150, and get an OS that's freaking MINE, and not just full to the gills with spyware. adware, nagware, tracking software, etc etc etc? What if that? Are they even going to sell this thing? If they're not, its because they're figuring they can just take full advantage of you in other ways.

And they've said this is going to be their last OS. Maybe that's a good thing for the computing world. But that too seems wrong. Maybe it won't be, maybe they're full of it, maybe the whole thing won't really work out that well for them, like so many of their business ventures. But I ain't using it. I mean, just look what they tried to do with the 360, until it became blatantly obvious (even to them) that the system was doomed unless they changed their tune? See the short vid below, its an excellent representation of what went down. Yes its somewhat comedic but its exactly what happened. I'm telling you guys, this whole thing is a bad idea.

Every version of Window has been claimed to have NSA/FBI/ECT spying ability. XP was said to report illegal software and stop game piracy(sound familiar?).

If you are worried about any of the spying get off the internet. Even with careful use you are tracked and data is collected.

Do you game? Have you ever read the terms of use for those games? Blizzard(once the maker of the most popular MMO) outright says they will never guarentee that a game client they release is free from viruses or other harmful components.

Most of the stuff in Windows 10 is for online services. They need to know what you type and say to Cortana to perform a search and get used to what you ask for(it can be disabled). Once disabled it does not send your search requests to MS or anything(provided you turn off the web settings).

If you have an email with hotmail/msn did you think they could not access it before?

Not trying to be an a## or anything, but this is just being blown way out of proportion. Cell phones track people too, yet most people still use them(Do you know what your phone is doing in the background without looking at the source of each build?).

Do I like the mass web integration of Windows 10, not really, but will the average customer? I would say they do.

For the record, I do NOT like the idea of subscription software services either(after all a paid software package can be used for years for a lower cost than its subscription counterpart.).

This irrational paranoia is starting to get a little old. The same people who complain about this (not necessarily PhotonFanatic, just some people in general) will say these things about windows 10 not really understanding or wanting to understand how the complained about things work. A lot of these same people use Facebook, have credit cards and use an iDevice without a second thought (definition of irony). Credit card companies (and insurance for that matter) know a lot more about you than MS could ever possibly hope to know. Ever shop at target? Have a target card? Please people.

If you're really that concerned about 10 you've got a few options.
  • You can learn how Windows 10 really works and disable/modify the components until it acts the way you like.
  • You install a firewall like pfSense (in a VM on the local host or as a separate physical device) to track your traffic and defend against whatever it is exactly you're concerned over or
  • you can always switch to Linux/*BSD and manually do all the stuff it's easy to take for granted with a Windows OS. It will be a part time job for the first year or two but you won't have evil MS to worry about.

You could even go full RMS. Compile your own kernel, run an open source BIOS. Grow a beard...make everybody say "GNU". Complain about people not saying "GNU" enough. It's an option...

For the "last OS" comment that's actually referring to a different thing. MS is actually adopting something of an OS X model in that way. Rolling out new revisions to existing users.

But they're also using the same base OS from the lowliest low-end phone in a developing economy to an XBox to high end "big metal" servers. So I believe all that "last OS" thing actually means is that there won't be a "Windows 11", they'll just keep continuously developing new builds of 10 perpetually. Due to the way they tie the activations to the hardware they can provide ISOs of the builds without worrying about piracy. You buy a license when you buy a device. And that license is yours until the device dies.

By the way I'm not defending or apologizing for MS or Windows 10. The complaints about it are just...maybe I'm old. I've been using 10 since August. i still get this little popup notification about stocks. I'm too lazy so far to disable it though. I actually don't like that much but I'm also too lazy to re-install again. So I'm sticking it out. MS violating my privacy is what I'm worried about least with 10.

After reading those two replies, you guys seem to think you've got it all figured out, and its all ok. Well most of that stuff yall listed off, doesn't apply to me. I don't use facebook, I wouldn't use MSN mail if they paid me, I don't play WoW, I don't shop at target, I don't use an iphone, (and my android has cyanogenmod on it) etc etc etc. I do play other games though.

Now, am I under any illusions that I'm not being "monitored"? Hell no. I know its going on. Due to my personal habits and security measures it may be going on less than with most people, but its still going on. Like he said the only way to stop it is to go offline. Which I may actually do, and only flip on a switch to turn on the modem and router when I'm actually using the internet. Might have to look into that a little more. But anyway I feel like you may have missed the general point of my first post.

I know its been going on since the XP days, and maybe before that, but I see no need to just complacently buy right into it. To just take the bait, hook, line, and sinker. No thank you. I can see no reason to just hand it all over. For what? So they can advertise to me better? So they can "help" me better? I know what I'm doing on my computer, thank you. I don't need your little helper program. Get the hell out of my business, people. Leave me alone. I'll tell YOU when I'm ready to buy something, and what it will be, I don't need you sitting there making guesses in some kind of disingenuous effort to help me. What do you think you're going to do? Get so darn good at guessing, that you'll be able to pop up with stuff that I just won't be able to resist, and will buy right there on the spot? Is that what I want happening to me while I'm using my computer normally?

Why is all of this stuff becoming more and more invasive? You're right, I may switch to linux, in the end. And just leave an unconnected gaming rig running windows, for gaming only. As usual, microsoft has gotten too greedy for their own good, and are losing yet another customer. They've seen how rich google has gotten off of this stuff, and they want a piece of the pie.

As for being able to turn it off, I doubt it. You may be able to make nag you less, but there's no way they're going to let you truly turn it off. They've never been in the business of just giving stuff away for free. Which is what that would be doing. I'm sure they just go into quiet mode, while still gathering data and sending it off to whoever is paying them for it. Otherwise they just gave you a free OS, cause they're nice and they like you.
