Is anyone else using No-Limits bios for 24/7 running? My card is under water max load temps are 45c

The Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming has the more than one BIOS installed on it
I discovered on TechPower database that there are two original BIOSes for the 980 G1: 84.04.1F.00.B7 and 84.04.1F.00.B8.
The version number is the same except for the last part.

Now the important part:
If you plug a monitor in the DVI-D connector (example), the card will load the secondary BIOS, the 84.04.1F.00.B7 (B seven).
This BIOS is VERY different from the main one: it can be only partially overwritten and it has huge thermal throttle (start throttling at 61 degrees Celsius and has voltage limits [or maybe the voltage/clock steps are broken]).

So if you want to flash your card, be sure that 84.04.1F.00.B8 (B eight) BIOS is loaded.

Two methods to be 100% sure:
1) After disabling the GFX card before flashing, open GPU-Z and check the BIOS version listed there.
2) During flashing, nvflash will ask you for confirmation two times. The second time it will tell you the current BIOS version and the new one. Check that BOTH are 84.04.1F.00.B8 (B eight).

Do not flash the other secondary BIOS.

I just dont know how to flash the BIOS now.
In Safe Mode I cant use nvflash, because there is a missing service.
And when I boot in windows normally without drivers, there is an error massage: I got no nVidia Adapter.

In device manager the GPU is referred to something, I dont know anymore. It doesnt say anything about nVidia or GTX 970. Generic or Standart something.

I tried flashing via USB but there is still a error saying I cant use that command in DOS mode.

Yea, but they do NOT explain that anywhere.
And by the way, the DualBIOS that the box talk about is NOT the same thing I'm talking about.

Alright i believe i got something working.

i could hit CLK74 speeds as table was set and this is the first time that i can reach the target frecuency on boost that I WANTED not the only that the cards wants.

Still trying to fight temperature issues.

at 100% tdp my card will boost from original 1165 to 1455 and reach a healthy 80ºC. if i unleash the TDP to 125% that card will auto boost to 1582, and that was the exactly frecuency that i setted up so this is a nice advance at least for me.

Just let me know you all people that helped me what do you think about it. Again i'm still fighting temp issues now. at 125% i get everything i want regarding clocks but temp is too high to afford it.

Regards

HWINFO doesn't read both STRIX's Digi+ VRM's correctly, it only reads one of the two properly and the other just shows the VID of 1212. you can still see the mW going up in GPUTweak if you monitor voltage. make sure both cards are synced.

this -enhance power efficiency by 15%- does this compare to other 970 cards or is it comparing to stock 970?
if it is comparing to other 970 brands it shoud mean that card can pull less power than other cards under same clock's or i am missing the point? maybe that's reason why strix has only one 8pin compared to other brands...

no idea, probably marketing... and because Asus uses this same Digi+ VRM in all their motherboards. I do know that the 980 STRIX has 10-phase. regarding the 970 STRIX, it has 1 digital VRM controller (Digi+), 3 IR3598 rectifiers controlling 6 phases, each phase has 3 MOSFET. The 3 rectifiers can each be configured to drive two phases simultaneously or alternate between phases for better power efficiency. I don't know how Asus has the phase tuning configured, but I'd guess it's somewhat like "Asus optimized phase tuning profile" on their motherboards. perhaps under high load it goes into full phase mode, and reduces to 3 phase when idle. or when temps reach some value it falls back to 3 phase, i don't really know.

more info HERE on the power delivery of the strix 970

I would not go over 80-ish for PCIe slot especially when running SLi that's a lot of load for the motherboard. technically the 24pin connector only has 4 pins dedicated for PCIe slot power (which is why the standard became 24pin instead of 20pin). there's a reason some boards have a dedicated power plug for PCIe slots.

even if card is pulling less than 200w driver crashes so it's not a TDP thing, changing voltages gives me nothing but they are changing as i see in gpuz changes in tdp usage , alsow i never seen not one artifact while overclocking headscratch.gif
so if card has power and it has voltages why is driver chrashing at 1540mhz and not getting grey screen as i had before?

these cards baffle me, 2 days ago I was stable at 1481/3954 and only dipping down a tiny bit under 3DMark Extreme demo, now it's hitting PerfCap: PWR, VRel, SLi and going down to 800MHz and back up again (since all my boost clocks are at 1212mW). Also I just had a BSOD after it dipped to 800MHz. don't know what changed it passed 9hrs of this without going to 800MHz before. perhaps my cards are "broken in" now... like CPU's need a break-in period.

If I set up a voltage slope on the upper clocks, it gets stuck at VRel, SLi at the next lowest CLK entry that hits 1200mW, even when power is back down to 80% again. I thought maybe it was that last "fixed voltage" entry because it was 1200mW, changing that to 1212 didn't do anything - still got stuck. Others seem to report they don't get stuck at other CLK entries when hitting VRel, so maybe this has something to do with SLi once one card hits VRel.

I think to get above 1500 reliably, you're gonna need more voltage from GPUTweak, but it then becomes hard to stability test due to hitting power caps. max i was able to draw was around 230w (75+160 with 5w headroom), but now I may need to lower it. it could be that your GPU's just can't do the speed you're trying to do, you will hit a wall eventually where no power/volts will matter. nothing scales infinitely.

I've copied all the BIOS settings from the G1 no limits BIOS to the BIOS's on my cards, double checked and even triple checked I did everything right, so I'm unsure what my problem is.

I've gotten my cards with the stock BIOS @ these clocks and @ these voltages stable running valley, so 1595 MHZ shouldn't be an issue with more voltage pumped in I would think? ( even tried lowering the max boost to 1544 in the BIOS, and changing the boost table down to 1544 max as well, just to see if that was the problem)

I can flash the BIOS fine on both GPU's, and even run a benchmark fine in windows, but the second MSI afterburner opens my PC BSOD's. When I run any type of benchmark or any type of game without MSI afterburner open, my cards won't boost past like 700 mhz. (Or atleast that's what GPU-Z is telling me)

I tried re-installing the nvidia driver & also afterburner, and once afterburner opens it just instantly BSOD's with error code "NVLDDMKM.SYS". A buddy of mine told me to double check that my PCI-E lane power wasn't overly increased, and the PCI-E lane was still at the default, which I believe is the same value as the G1 970 no limits BIOS if I read this correctly.
I did the stuff like telling NVCP to prefer max performance, but I'm not sure where to go next. ( I saw this mentioned in the thread a bunch of times, so I figured I'd do it)

Do I need to lower the power table / voltage, or should I try using something other than afterburner? (Can I do that without any issues?)

If you guys need any pictures of stuff, let me know and I'll gladly take pics.

I found a tutorial online explaining how to fix nvlddmkm.sys crashes, I will see if it helps, but I'll post this here anywhere just to hit all the bases so to speak.

Please take a look at one of my posts a few pages back where I talk about the PCI and PSU rails configurations on G1 vBIOS. The only way I could get my overclock stable at a constant clk74 boost was after changin the power tables.

If you're having problems with afterburner try Gigabyte OC Guru II. The new version is pretty straightforward and work just as well.

Oh boy how I'd like to break the 14000 barrier on Firestrike, my current max is 13600 with 1607 core clock and 7400 memory clock.

Does your G1 has Samsung or Hynix memory? Mine has hynix and they're terrible overclockers.

Could you post some pics of your current bios?

Even when that happens, 300W is only 20W above these G1 stock max TDP. Also I, sadly, don't see myself playing in the 4K resolutions any time soon.

BTW Heaven is more stressful than Valley for some reason. EVGA rep confirmed it. But I could be 12+hr stable in heaven/valley and still crash in 3DMark or games...

The memory is Samsung, I bought the card on release, I believe the later models are using Hynix more.
Using the No-Limits G1 bios in the original post, I think I can go higher on the memory, seems alot more stable since I watercooled plus the EK backplate that passive cools the RAM on the backside.

Yup but I assumed he used this package and the modded BIOS has now caused this "problem". If he uses the stock BIOS from there, he'll end up in the same situation.. same BIOS, different values (of course it's a guess).

Was going through the owners thread first page and there was a person ~2 weeks ago who showed reference 970 with the Titan cooler (that's yours right)? You may want to look him up and PM to confirm what card it is and ask if he can provide his BIOS.

Regarding your problem not being able to flash, I don't really get this. You said you can install drivers, doesn't the install step check for applicable HW and if it doesn't exist then it wouldn't install the SW. Do the cards show up as 970 in Safe Mode then?
