Hi guys, does anybody knows why kombustor in AB throttles so much? I'm on 1531Mhz with custom bios and in Firestrike, overall system consumption about 400W and there is no throttling at all. But kombustor, jeees, throttles to 1400Mhz even the system consuming 450W (Card could be ~300W) ? Does it need more than 300W to work without throttling on 1531Mhz ? I'm bit worried 'cos my TPD is around 140%. Does anybody know how far can I go and if it is safe? I thought my card is perfectly stable with no throttling but kombustor killed it smile.gif Thx!

I think this demonstrates that when using Kombuster, your temps are surging up over 70C. Heat is what causes the throttling. I am on water and I get zero throttling with Kombuster @1571 so it is likely heat causing this. What this tells me is that heat isn't enough of an issue to cause throttling when running firestrike but heat IS enough of an issue to cause throttling with Kombuster, since it is essentially a 'power virus' designed to push the GPU and VRMs hard so that doesn't surprise me.

You can do a few things:
(1) Open your case, put your GPU fan on 100% and put a small house fan blowing at your GPU. This is basically all you can do without getting too creative, to take as much HEAT out of the equation as possible. Try Kombuster again and see if the throttling has been reduced and if temps are now under 70C. If so, you know it is heat and you can then experiment trying to use a custom GPU fan curve.

(2) You may be able to gain some benefit by modding your BIOS to increase your TDP if you can't address the problem with fans *AND* your temps are in normal range. I suspect you can resolve this with cooling though.

Hi all,

tjank you for this nice post but infortunately there are a lot of page to read . . . .

I Have 2 watercooled GTX 970 FTW. I used to flash with EVGA-GTX970-SCACX20.GM204-AIR and it work very fine my temp is very low.

I wanna go further but can't find the watercooled version. Can you give me one that i can flash or maybe one that i can inspirated to mod mine ?

Best regards

Thanks for comment. Hmm, I don't know because it will start lower the clocks immediately the kombustor starts and temp is around 70 - 75C but I've set the temp limit to 90C so this should not be a problem. I can also run fans at 100% and temp is about 60C but it downlock to 1395Mhz anyway. I would say it is because it reach power target, this I have set for 130% but I also had 140% and the system consumed 450W so this is crazy consumption of card and still throttling ? I really don't know why is that... What is your max. consumption on such high clocks in AB Kombustor test? I've attached power targets I have set, can you look at them if they are OK ? I've set TPD for 300W so it's pretty high I would say... Still throttling in AB Kombustor. Also good to mention I'm running 5019Mhz@1.200V, it's pretty stable in Firestrike. In kombustor the system consumption is 420W. My ASIC is 82.4% which is also very good. GPU-Z show it throttling because of "Pwr" but what power target should I set? My setup is 75W + 75W + 150W so I can't get more than 300W can I ? What power consumption do you have with kombustor @1571 ?

Here some screenshots:

Throttling starts around 70C, I am not on air anymore so I can't go back and verify but I thought @70C the card starts to throttle like it or not so we need to keep the temps below that. Can someone else clarify this part please?

That would indicate that heat wasn't the issue, and that is strange because it sounds like a heat issue.. I see that you are using a custom BIOS. Have you gone back to the stock BIOS to see how things react using the stock BIOS?

This is what I see on my 980 old version 2 (Click to show)
new version 3 (Click to show)

You are welcome to copy the settings that I use, to your BIOS and try.
I have power % configured for 122% and at that power there is more than my GPU would ever use.

Your temps are very nice smile.gif

Don't know what I'm doing wrong here but it's strange. Seems you have older version of msi kombustor (first screen), maybe it was not so demanding smile.gif
For second screenshot, with this test I have similar readings and don't have any problem with that but your TPD is only 68%. For me it's around 90%.

Could you please post your bios here, I would like to copy your tables and check it with your setting. Thx!

Btw, using stock bios is very bad as it down clock even more and throttle. I don't know what this fury test is smile.gif

This is my BIOS I am currently using, it is for a Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming rev. 1.0, F3 "DP" BIOS BIOS (Click to show)

Just downloaded the latest BIOS updates for my 980 from Gigabyte's website. Anyone knows why the checksum is marked in red? On my stock BIOS the two values match and the background of the checksum is green.
