First off, thanks for the very detailed and thought out responses! Very much appreciated!! biggrin.gif

For background info i currently run 1440p@60Hz. My setup is more than adequate to handle the power and heat requirements of SLI 670. My main concern with SLI is the smoothness, consistency and reliability of the framerate and the overall gaming experience. I have never owned an SLI setup personally, so im unsure whether it would bother me or not: Personally i don't mind tearing too much, but i have a deep hate for stuttering, i never put vsync on.

Its a very good point that there are too many people trying to get rid of their old cards. If its a buyers market then i probably should take advantage of that.

After some thought, i think i should proably do as suggested and wait for AMD's new cards and then decide if i should grab a second 670 or not. I'm hoping AMD keep up the their trend of being a better solution for hi-res gaming, if so i may just have to grab whatever they come out with to pair with my 1440p screen. If i do upgrade now, it'll likely be my only major upgrade for 2 years (till i finish uni).

If stuttering is a concern, you may want to look for some video reviews on the GTX 670 SLI. I had a hard time finding any reviews with frame times included, however there is a general consensus that in some cases micro stutter is noticeable. Keep in mind that some games will work better, and some games won't work at all with SLI. If you have a particular set of games that you play, start looking at reviews with those games in them, and look for the delta between maximum, average and minimum framerates. If there is a large difference between these values with 2 cards and a small difference with one, you can expect some perceivable stuttering. Good luck!

Waiting is the smartest move. I'm tempted to purchase the matrix 290x being its the cheapest they've ever been. r9 3xx could be double the bandwidth, and few more gbs of ram as a standard. Crossfire 7970's still do ok in 1440p, so going sli won't be a bad move.

But

If can go a single solution again for 1440p my gaming experience would be 10 fold having not to deal with scaling.

Was in the same boat as you, grabbed the 970. Too much value for the money smile.gif

Wow aren't i just an awful person weirdsmiley.gif been super busy so this just escaped my mind. Sorry bout that...

All in all considering my situation, im gonna wait:
I wont be able to really use the any cards i own properly till mid December coz its non-stop work till then. Since i don't have a preference for red or green, i wont be using it anytime soon, and more cards are on the way, waiting appears to be my best option. If i happen to see a 4gb 670 cheap i may grab it, but it'd have to be real cheap. Also considering my preferences (big dislike to stutter), a strong single card is preferred.

Gave some rep to major contributors to the thread (and my decision), thanks for the very thorough answers thumb.gif

I hope this thread proves useful to any lurkers and googlers in the same boat as me

I will close this thread just as soon as i figure out how... headscratch.gif

Sounds like a sound judgement, and I did the same thing. I waited for 2nd gen. Maxwell because I knew that everything except the high end cards were pretty much refreshes with both the Green and Red side. The combination of the performance/$ with 2nd gen, Maxwell, and the fact that my HD7870 committed suicide is what really pushed me towards buying a GTX970. A GTX670 is no slouch by any means, so it's not like you will be unable to play any current games with your current setup. Having a 144hz 1440p display on the other hand would certainly benefit from the added graphics power you could attain from a much more modern GPU.

If you are willing to wait, there are some good things coming in the future. AMD should have some new GPU's released at the beginning of next year, and Nvidia will not only have more options to choose from (GTX 960, 990, etc) as well as the die shrink we have all been waiting for in the foreseeable future.

As far as closing the thread, I do not believe you can do that, only a forum moderator can. I believe it's best to leave it open so when you get a new GPU you can post what you chose to get, your benchmarks, etc.

Certainly looking forward to whatever cards release in the next few months, hope they're super competitive.

good point on the benchmarks. 670 4gb @ 1440p --> whatever-i-get @ 1440p should be useful.
