the whole obsession over FPS/Resolution for consoles/PC - Page 2

We need marketing like the consoles manufacturers do to pimp their consoles, but to point out everything good about PC. However who is the One entity to represent us? Valve is the closest candidate, but we have to agree we have somewhat of a problem getting the word out to the mainstream.

Case Ubisoft troll internet. 30fps more cinematic, console makers are 'pressuring them' into 30FPS for PC rolleyes.gif

I can't help but wonder if this is all about preparing for live streaming of games (PlayStation Now, et al). Of course they'd love for that to be the dominant model, as it's DRM taken to its extreme limit. Surely they won't be able to deliver more than 30fps via that mechanism, so maybe they don't want console players to get too accustomed to 60fps as it could stifle adoption of streaming.

Maybe they'll start throwing in other things you get with streaming, such as input lag and compression artifacts during gameplay.

I think its getting mentioned more just because its an objective measure of the game. At the end of the last console cycle the bloggers were using these comparisons to show the difference in performance between PS3 and xbox 360 as well as its impact on graphical fidelity. That practice has carried across into the xb1 and ps4 and its the one part of the reviews that remains objectively comparable. You can't argue that 900p is better than 1080p at the frame rate, its obvious and apparent which one looks better given everything else apparently being the same.

I actually to add I am surprised the consoles are performing as badly as they are, given the hardware in them I expected to reach 1080p@60 like equivalent PCs are, this 780p @30 fps is laughably bad compared to the GPUs that are kind of equivalent on the PC and what they are achieving. Something went badly wrong in the design of these consoles because they under perform their basic specifications.

I admit the GPUs, at least in the ps4 is decent, given that it is pretty much an underclocked 7870, but I have to say they are terribly bottlenecked by the intended-for-netbook Jaguars that they put in. It wouldn't be all that bad if the devs can use all eight, but they're restricted to 6 of them, the other two reserved to background OS. they cannot even use the full 8gb ram either, 3gb of it is reserved to OS as well.

Now, when you think of an balanced CPU to go with a 7870, you think something like an i5 2500k or even FX-6350, right? But the reality is that the decent 7870 is paired with an CPU, that singlethread speedwise, is not much better than an K8 AMD CPU, so that's where some of the crippling happens, now they have to offload physics onto the GPU, etc.

Just not balanced well, CPU wise.

Well, technically there's nothing stopping them from doing 1080p/60. It's just that they would have to cut down on detail.

If you think about it, the reason we can get 60fps on the PC is because we can throw more powerful hardware at the game. The games are made to run on a variety of graphics cards, so if you have something that exceeds the requirement you can get more FPS. On a fixed platform like a console, the balance is up to the developer, and in most cases they have prioritized detail over framerate. I wonder if we'll ever reach a point where they will go for 60fps on everything because it always comes at a potential cost of more detail.

Would console gamers be happy with the same amount of detail they got last gen, but at 1080p/60? I don't know, but developers don't think so apparently.

Like they dont already tongue.gif

Its all preference i suppose though, myself i would have higher frame rate over detail in an FPS or fast moving game any day of the week.

I'm trying to remember which specific games but there have been a few instances were console developers game the user choice to configure the graphics focusing either on visuals or framerate. Maybe more developers should consider this.
