Dual boot Linux on MBP?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone.

So I've never been a fan of Apple products, nor have I owned a Mac before, but I'm starting a new job in a few weeks that comes with a brand new 15" Macbook Pro. Now I want to give OSX a chance, but I'm much more interested in dual booting with Crunchbang. Is it possible for me to run Crunchbang natively on the hardware? Would this require Boot Camp (I have no idea how boot camp works)? I'm not interested in running any local VM's.

Any information shared is greatly appreciated.

This should help you set up rEFInd: http://www.overclock.net/t/1463546/tips-tricks-and-scrips-xebs-os-x-guide#post_21707922

I'm not sure about the Linux-specific setup for EFI systems, though. Just make sure whatever you do, you make a clone of your disk before you start messing with partitions.

I would use rEFInd as well. You can use Bootcamp to do the partitioning if you want to go that way. The Hundred Gunner has a nice tutorial for you.

Here is the direct web address if you want it as well: http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/

I'm gonna assume that if they're giving you Mac it means that you'll have Mac specific things to run. I'm also going to assume that installing anything but the companies GM on your company computer would probably be a bad idea.

Na, this is not the case at all.

They are a small company, with the majority of staff being traveling consultants. They have no sort of device management in place, nor will this device be joined to any sort of LDAP (although I will have an LDAP account for mail, and a few other things). We are all (or most) highly technical people, and the tools we use are up to us.

I don't start with them until the 28th (a week from today!), and the only possible tool that I could see them using that I need to use, would be some sort of jabberd/XMPP based chat utility. If this is true, and it is indeed based on jabberd, I feel confident that there will be a usable chat client on Linux (but I have a feeling they just use Skype, or something like that).

To the other commenters, sorry about my delayed response. I've been busy wrapping things up at my current job, and getting ready for this new adventure, but it seems rEFInd is what I'm looking for. I suspect next weekend will be the absolute latest for when I set this up.

Thanks again to all.

No worries sir. Glad you are getting things pulled together. Transitions are fun and crazy all at the same time. Many blessings as you take this new path. thumb.gif
