Overclocking the FX-4130 with a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5 Rev3.0 - Page 4

Probably your ram. Post up a shot of CPUz SPD and memory tabs I'll have a look. Could be a bad driver too from what you described earlier.

OK. I will post this evening. I know that the screenshot I posted early in the thread will remain very similar.. SPD lists XMP-1866 as follows ->

10/11/10/30/40/2T @ 1.5V

Pretty sure my current timings (set to Auto.. can change if needed) are 10/12/10/30/40 @ 1.5V (set in BIOS).

So the second number is different and I'm missing the command rate of 2T?

Driver as in video driver? Based on how I am fiddling around with the NB Freq & it corrects itself.. I would find it less likely -- but yes, anything is possible. The problem persisted across 2 video cards with this driver.. but was corrected with both video cards once I get the NB Freq back to 2000.

I thought it was good until you swapped cards the first time but either way we'll have a look. I might not be around much I'm prepping for a benching session but will check in when I can

Stupid question here.. I swear I was able to change the NB Frequency earlier.. despite me changing it in BIOS.. the system always keeps it at 2000.. even though I have 2200, 2400, 2600 selected in BIOS.. is that because I have my CPU Core speed set to 200, or.. does it coincide with needing to be close to a multiple of my RAM speed?

Trying to figure this all out.. thanks for bearing with me.

Bump.. anyone on why when I'm changing the NB Frequency it doesn't show the change in CPU-Z or the OS.. or BIOS? Does it have to do with my core speed or memory speed?

Just an update.. I got my tube of Gelid GC-Extreme .. did my other 2 Athlon II's .. Got some good results, at least a 5C swing at full load. I did this computer.. Before -- 10 mins of small FFTs would put me at around 64-66C. I did add a 120mm side fan (40CFM - blowing in) .. so the results could be slightly skewed.. but I'm seeing a peak of 56-57C now.. nearly a 10C swing. Not sure if this stuff needs any break-in.. but I'll swing the temps up & down for awhile.

This is versus Arctic Silver Ceramique 2.

Have a newborn & a toddler, so I did not get a heck of a lot of time to play around with this besides the new thermal paste. I do have an FX-8320E coming today though.. and a 140mm Corsair Red LED fan coming on Wednesday to install on the side of the case.. so I can get 65 CFM coming in versus the 35 CFM the currently fan is pushing. I feel like it really helps cool the back of the GPU & overall move a lot more air through the case.

Don't plan to abandoned the FX-4130 CPU, but I do need to find a motherboard & RAM to drop it into.. either an Asus or Gigabyte 990FX.

I still don't quite understand why the board is not allowing the NB to go beyond 2000. It's like it has a dependency that must be raised as well.

The board should n't be the issue here sparcy, if your in manual and have changed the frequency. It is possible that the board is resetting it at start up because of instability. I would suggest you try setting it to 2400 and also increase the NB core voltage to 1.25 and see if it takes.

You know, I suspected that.. this board is too intelligent sometimes. I wish it would inform me of the instability.. I will play around with that fundamental.. thanks.

The Gigas have a dual bios so if the clock fails it starts from the backup. You'll usually get a cycle up then down then up agin when this happens.
