So Who's Going/Gone X99? - Page 4

Yeah, the RAM prices are a big thorn in my side. Not the end of the world of course, just bugs me that they are so inflated and I know they will be coming down significantly once production ramps up. That's the game we play though rolleyes.gif

In other news, the radiators have been ordered and should be here early next week. I did end up adding the 280 figuring that anything that would help me keep the fan speed (and noise) to a minimum would be a good thing wink.gif DAZ is sending the block, pump and res, so I'll be able to start laying everything out smile.gif

An interesting turn of events: My wife gave me an Oculus Rift DK2.It wasn't some kind of gift and she's most definitely NOT a gamer, so I'm not sure what that's about. She'll "get back to me" about it later. Intrigue - I love it! biggrin.gif

I say go for it. Yeah, DDR4 is stupidly expensive for no reason, but, in the end, I think you'll be a happy man with it.

Yeah that's how I feel, the 8 cores is the only thing tempting me, but in reality it doesn't gain me much even on my workstation

Turns out I don't really have a choice but to go X99 since all of a sudden, my motherboard isn't recognizing 3 of my sticks of RAM.

This is how it may look like (photos from my 5805). I definitely will do this again on my new build... thumb.gif

I guess this can also be done on a LSI controller. I you're not restricted to a 1-slot solution, some cheap universal chipset cooler will do. They often come with exchangeable mounting brackets to adapt to different mounting point dimensions. And if nothing else helps, there's always adhesive thermal compound tape (this is how Adaptec mounts their stock coolers for instance)... wink.gif

The controller I'm currently considering is the LSI Logic Megaraid Eight-Port 6Gb/s PCI Express 3.0 SATA+SAS RAID Controller LSI00330

The biggest issue that people seem to have with it (like most boards in its class) is that it runs quite hot, so your suggestion may be a great solution. Clearance for a block won't be a problem.
