Could we do a better GPU air cooler? - Page 4

Waterblock on a loop is great if cost was not an issue. biggrin.gif
post #32 of 87
Most of the loop you will have forever. Once you get over the initial cost I think it is a great investment for anyone worried about temperatures.

Radiator, fans, pump, reservoir and fittings are reusable, but initial cost is at least £200,00 and can easily run £500.00 or more .. and they do not last forever. biggrin.gif VGA waterblocks are £80.00 to £150.00 and usually don't work on new graphics card. Add extra maintenance and coolant costs. Graphics cards with good air coolers are not much more than those with less cooling so not savings there either.

Many of us cannot justify the large cash outlay of custom loops .. and a well thought out and build air cooled system is more than adequate for our needs. The only real problem is Graphics card coolers .. and if the industry were to make a good £50-100.00 cooler that channeled it's heated exhaust out of case many of us would buy it.

After reading this thread I might try and convert the cooler on my 'old' MSI 280x into something a bit better, I'll probably leave the heatsink alone but experiment with different fans and try to convert it to a blower style cooler, initially it will be a bodge job but if it leads to significant improvements I might make a better looking version... I'll report back when I have the time.

Heat dump on my 770 isn't a big deal, there's so much airflow it doesn't matter.

No san ace and koolance, they are only 105-116 cfm fans. Anyway, the case ambient doesn't really increase much at load, biggest problem is not enough heatpipes on my heatsinks to get the heat away from the cpu/gpu.

The GPU hits about 60*C in BF4 ultra 1080P.

Bigger is better, if you guys want better GPU coolers go with the really oversized ones like the Prolimatech MK13,26, Arctic Accelero Extreme, Deepcool Dracula, Alpenfohn Peter.

I like the MK13 because it was one of the few that fit my PCI-E power plug design (see avatar pic) and it has a metal brace that holds the two fans and also lifts the card up so it doesn't sag. The fans are mounted on the brace not the card smile.gif

That's a nice looking heatsink.

I was just looking at some 4U server setups, and that got me thinking... what about using PCIe riser cards/ribbon cables to move the card/cards into some sort of custom enclosure? Perhaps mounted in some extra 5.25'' bays to pull cool air in from the front of the case. This would solve the heat dump slightly since you could turn the whole thing into part of the case intake setup.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Does adding extra distance interfere with PCIe performance?
