[Ars] Apple updates desktop iMac line with “5k” Retina displays - Page 16

"Much more interesting is how Apple is driving it. Since no one has a 5K timing controller (TCON) yet, Apple went and built their own. This is the first time we’re aware of Apple doing such a thing for a Mac, but it’s likely they just haven’t talked about it before. In any case, Apple was kind enough to confirm that they are driving the new iMac’s display with a single TCON. This is not a multi-tile display, but instead is a single 5120x2880 mode.

This also means that since it isn’t multi-tile, Apple would need to drive it over a single DisplayPort connection, which is actually impossible with conventional DisplayPort HBR2. We’re still getting to the bottom of how Apple is doing this (and hence the sneaky nature of the iMac), but currently our best theory is that Apple is running an overclocked DisplayPort/eDP interface along with some very low overhead timings to get just enough bandwidth for the job. Since the iMac is an all-in-one device, Apple is more or less free to violate specifications and do what they want so long as it isn’t advertised as DisplayPort and doesn’t interact with 3rd party devices."

Update: And for anyone wondering whether you can drive the 5K display as an external display using Target Display Mode, Apple has confirmed that you cannot.

Nope, no other Mac has the bandwidth hence no 5K ATD.

I think you should have a look at the specs, they aren't half bad when you include the cost of the monitor.
Do you really think acting like a hater is going to help you get your point across?
This ain't a laptop... no, not most of the laptops are 768... cheap ones are. And they are cheap for a reason. And there's no point going high-ress on 12-15 inch screens. 1080 is more than enough on those sizes. Same goes for big screen. I can't and don't enjoy 4K or even 1440 on my 60". In games maybe, but there's that small problem of gpu not being able to handle that... So I'm either supposed to invest iMac price in gpu's solely or not "enjoy" questionable 4K in games.
uhm, the specs for running 5k is not even close to realistic outside browsing and watching youtube. Pushing high-res displays without hardware that can actually support it is not something that will persevere. Running it on i5 with mobile gpu will help how exactly?
Somebody pointing that there are better things than apple products will always be branded as hater. Your point? Is there another that you didn't prove in your last sentence?

edit: actually your laptop example is something that brought up in previous post. People love to compare low end win based pc'laptops vs high-end highly price apple products...

The difference is though... it won't be like running 4k on your TV. It's going to have the same workspace as a 1440p monitor but everything will just be incredibly sharp. (Though there'll probably be options for an even larger workspace, too.)

Those mobile GPUs are very powerful -- particularly the M295X. It's going to be fine for low or medium end games, and anything else can have the resolution turned down to 1440p or something in-between that and 2880p.

For many people this is a worthwhile computer, and that's all that really matters. You could spend hours critiquing the performance and design, but it really comes down to how innovative and impressive the 5K display is for the price point whilst outputting what looks to be decent numbers

That's just wrong. I know photographers and architects who use AIOs. Specifically the iMac. I know one of the photographers is looking forward to getting this new iMac for the screen.

I stand corrected.

I will trade all of my Cisco blades for some Mac Mini's. Because, they can clearly do the same job.

It's just a matter of degree.

I don't know. All the serious professionals I have run into, after attaining some success, tend to not compromise. Sure they may have an Imac. But that probably won't be their main weapon of choice. But what do I know?

You missed my point completely, I'm saying that high res is far from widely adopted, its still a very niche market. So high res can use any push it gets. If there's anything that apple is good at its making hype around things, this way the general consumer knows whats out there. general adoption drives technology much faster than the niche market.

And just fyi, I'm calling you a hater because how you respond to people. I personally never owned an apple device, don't like apple devices and never intend to own them.

Same, I've never had a Apple device, and generally disdain Apple products, but I have to admit this is a pretty fair value for people interested in UHD displays.

Of course they're probably going to take another four years to update it from this so, yeah. tongue.gif

Indeed. It's funny how blind so called tech "forward" people can be when a brand other than theirs pushes boundaries.

Sure I never really liked Apples wares. But I will buy this. That quality screen for $2500? And you get a computer thrown in as well!
