I bought a TV with a Lan Port for more options, since the initial news about the PS4 was media features would be added after launch.

How does it perform though? I have a TV with interet and DLNA capabilities, but it doesn't have anywhere near enough grunt to stream HD video on my internal network. The ps3 could do it with a little transcoding, I was hoping the PS4 would be a powerhouse that I could stream raw to

I think most of us are generally OK with consoles, its just sometimes we have to justify our superiority and there are a few trolls who will stand out form the rest of the community that generally stays quiet. I for one have no problem with consoles. Its a heck of a lot easier to snatch up a ps4 for $400 and start gaming right away than to build a pc and deal with all the driver, OS, security issues that come along with it. Whatever floats your boat i guess!

Except for the Xbone though. I have a disgust for the xbox one that burns hotter than the cores of a thousand fiery suns. But we'll leave that for another thread biggrin.gif

My Problem with a lot of smart TV's and shotty Transcoding via DLNA, is no DD or DTS passthrough. Being able to get a DD or DTS passthrough for the TV in my bed room is a must.

Now while the TV in my living room has a HDMI receiver so a 5.1 stream without DD/DTS will still work, when using a device like a HTPC. Surround Sound is a must for me, and I MUST have the ability to use the 5.1 stream from most HD video files. Most Movies are already in DD/DTS(AC3), other than a few that are in pure AAC. Stereo sound is a joke when it comes to watching a movie, and I would like not having to use a blu-ray or sony's over priced store to get it.

Also you can hear the PS4 while watching a blu-ray. It is quiet, but during a quiet scene you CAN hear it.

I really don't like the Meh software Smart TV's use, and Don't even own a smart TV. But it seems the only real device that is worth while is a HTPC for media these days. Atleast if 5.1 is a must for you.

Sony should really just give us a "Other OS" option, so we can load up windows or Linux. As their OS sucks. While being a gaming machine is great, you can't play games on it 24/7, and kinda is annoying when you always got to compromise to do other tasks.

Agreed about the sound of the ps4. Imight need to clean mine out or something, because even when not under load the fan is audible from my couch to the entertainment center (8ft or so)

I rip all my media from blurays, most of the time taking along the DTS:MA or Dolby TrueHD passthrough. No way am i going to go through all that trouble to end up transcoding back down to low bitrate stereo. Hence why ive resorted to building an HTPC. Plex seems to keep everything intact when streaming from my nas. I never had much luck on the ps3 using ps3ms or plex.

That's odd, I've had the exact opposite issue. Plex on the Roku3 and on PC's seems to have poor picture quality, even when set to the highest encode rate. Even running an HTPC directly to my TV via HDMI doesn't "seem" to have as good a picture as PS3Media Server ever did. (Spent hours configuring the HTPC, and the vanilla options from the PS3 still seem to trump the PQ)

My settings for PS3ms are to set transcode to none, and bit rate to the highest it can do. Then use a wired connection on the PS3. I get the best quality picture from this, and it seems to "trick" the PS3 into natively supporting .mkv files and stuff. I usually can see 20 to 30 mbps when watching content this way.

I've tried over a wifi connection, but 1080p is usually laggy, and absolutely forget about using the fast forward or rewind features.
