It's been brought to my attention that in order to use the Asus PG278Q ROG swift to it's fullest, SLI gtx980 might be preferable (possibly needed). Now this would bump the GPU budget from 800-850 to 1400-1500 (CAD). So this is something I have to think about.

As a consequence, would it be better to go with a single gtx970 and wait for the next big release that can run this beast as a single? (might also consider buying a 24 inch 1080p screen with this and then upgrade with next big GPU+best monitor at that moment).

Another point is the case, I've received a few suggestions, I'm being picky here but I'm not set yet. I've just recently come across the 450d which looks awesome except I'm worried about space (for a good aka big air cpu cooler) as well as the noise level. Did check out the 780T but I don't like the looks of it.

You can find 780ti's for 500 CAD.

That socket (1150) is EOL, isn't it? Kinda stuck between a rock and a hard spot.

I would not agree 100% that the 1150 socket is an EOL product. I'm still running a socket 1155 Core i5. Remember this is for a gaming rig. No need at the moment for the newest technologies for gaming. Most Ivy Bridge and all Sandy Bridge are more than enought horses under the hood to run anything out there right now -- Not necessary to be running Broadwell or Broadwell-E. Unless you're running something like a tri-SLI where you need those extra PCIe lanes... other than that though, you're good.
