Legend of Grimrock...

Thread Starter
Just bought this on Steam and what the hell? I saw the Metascore and user reviews and the game is unversally lauded. Figured I'd try it because I'm an old-school RPG fan but what is that? Controls are clunky and the character feels like a robot with no fluid movements. The angles at which you can move are way too sharp and the way your body interacts with the environment is horrible.

Graphics are dated but still has some charm.

Combat is plain boring and horrible.

Am I doing something wrong?

It's pretty similar to my experience, bought it on a sale and played for a few hours. Didn't catch with me.

It is very old school, and it pays homage to mid 80's/early 90's RPGs like Bard's Tale,Dungeon Master, Captive, Eye of the Beholder etc. I played all these as a kid and LoG resonates very well with me, You aren't the only one that doesn't like it, there are plenty ,especially younger ones that just can't get into it.

It's a grid based dungeon crawler, that is how they all play. I am old I like it. It's a different style of game with different tactics.

Exactly, this appeals to old school Gamers like me who schooled in the old Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder series, if you've not tried this type of game before try again with open eyes and mind it gets better as it goes on as you need to learn tactics, inventory strategy and ever harder puzzles to solve.

Playing the new Legend of Grimrock 2 just now, harder than the first one, bigger apparently and fantastic graphics both outdoors and in dungeons.

Dont confuse this game with the likes of Skyrim or similar, different kettle of fish altogether but still a great gaming experience once you get into it.

Cheap too.

Myself I hate grid based movement, but back then I saw the LoG screens and loved it, so I pre-ordered it. When I played it I still disliked the grid based, but loved the game very much, because it's very oldschool in style, not overblown like RPG's are today and like Japanese RPG's.

I loved the RPG system in LoG, it's not that modern day grinding and leveling, it's about character progression based on the circmstances and ways necessary to adapt to survive the dungeon. Your characters start of with a skillset and personality, but they learn on the way and you can decide which direction they go.

I love the oldschool RPG style, you don't see it these days. So it was a clear that I'd pre-order LoG2, but had no time to play yet, because Alien Isolation, Styx Master of Sahdows and Dreamfall Chapters to be released (I think today? Oh my... it's today!!).

Another game following the oldschoolness in RPG is "Sui Generis". Their Inspiration were the old Ultima games and they are making progress constatly and as an original backer I played the combat alpha already (just a fighting pit). This game is going to bring back oldschol RPG and evolve it.
