He didn't mention it, but you need Isopropyl alcohol 90% or higher. Leaving old TIM (even if you can't see it), especially a completely different compound than the new TIM probably isn't the best idea.

I 've never understood why this "absolute" mania for isopropilic alcohol for CPUs... My understanding is that basically the pastes contain synthetic oils (hence carbon based), so you need a solvent capable of dealing with oils (organic solvent) and drying/cleaning the surface. There seems to be a regional, almost cultural difference about the use of common "alcohol". In USA, seems the common "alcohol" you get in the supermarket or pharmacy is isopropilic. In Europe, at least in 4 countries i 've been, it's denaturated ethilic alcohol. They sell it in 90o-95o varieties and comes in different colours, according to what they add to denaturate. For instance, right now, i have a bottle of 90o denaturated ethanol that contains methylethilchetone, so it's undrinkable. It is also used for rubbing (for those who believe in such remedies anyway). Finding isopropylic on the contrary, is a bit more difficult, you have to search in photography or electronic shops.

Besides, isopropilic is more toxic than ethanol (even by inhalation, in the past when medicine didn't have anything better, the doctors were using it as anesthetic, but guess why it's not used anymore today...) and ethanol works as solvent just fine. I 've been using denaturated ethanol since socket 939 days, never a problem, cleans beautifully... Isopropilic is capable of cleaning more difficult problems (like grease in cars), but trust me, the paste is easily removable even by denaturated ethanol, it sparks at the end and you use a less toxic substance.

So, whatever one has, the important is being alcohol. After all, between isopropilic and ethylic, it's just a -CH3 difference, how much can this affect the solvent properties...

Personally, i don't understand why anyone would want to rub his skin with this:

http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/search/a?dbs+hsdb:@term+@DOCNO+116

But anyway. Just for history though, denaturated ethanol works just fine, guaranteed. Works on naked GPU die too. You have isopropilic? Fine too. Anything will do the job.

IDK why either, I have always seen it used to disinfect skin and such (like before you get a shot), not as an actual remedy or anything that you just rub onto your skin. Mostly though I just see it being used to clean objects. We have quite a few 55 gallon drums of the 99% stuff here at work, we use it all the time. And ya it works great to clean off TIM, gets it all in one wipe. But any plain old rubbing alcohol will work too.

I should be getting some 91% isopropilic alcohol here soon and my mx-4 thermal paste soon as well I hope. I'm also receiving my psu tomorrow or Friday.

Here you use ethanol for skin disinfection prior to injection. Not isoprolylic. In "popular" medicine some elder people like also to rub ethanol in aching joints and such, but, it's more of a placebo effect due to the temporary warmth caused by the rubbing/massage and the increased blood flow than a benefit of the ethanol itself. biggrin.gif I believe you that isopropilic cleans easier. I just don't feel there is need to use "such a good" cleaner in the case of CPUs. It's "toxic overkill". biggrin.gif

Dude, you have nothing but problems but you boldly claim how knowledgeable you are. Yo keep asking the same questions over and over. They are of the kindergarten level to be honest.

I can build them and get them running with an os. & repair them hardware, os, and office wise. I know nothing on how to oc cpu's or gpu's or how to put in a full loop. And yes that's cause I don't have the patience to go through the process to learn how to do it properly. So if I could leave the overclocking up to the professionals I would but unfortunately I can't. So I am forced to learn more about it. Basically I know everything a computer repair classroom teaches you to do. I also boldly claim to know absolutely nothing when it comes to overclocking.

MX4 is better than AS5 in terms of being able to apply it. There is no risk to shorting something out. AS5 may have better temperatures, but not after the set in time. Even then, it's not by much. I've used AS5 the entire time, but I want to give MX4 a shot. So when my current stick dries out or gets used up, I'll get some then.

And blaming thermal paste for bad overclocking sounds stupid. There are so many things that can be blamed first:
  • Having cheap fans on pull.
  • Having P/P but both on push.
  • Using half a stick of TIM
  • Not having pump plugged in.
  • Not having fans plugged in.
  • Bad seating.
  • Having your rig sitting inside a sealed cabinet.
  • Radiator cracked.
  • Tubing pierced.
I would go on, but that might take a while. My guess is your were trying to use a little too much paste. Either that, or your pump is faulty. I'm having a hard time believing these temperatures are normal.

But I am waiting to see how the new paste does. Should be at least somewhat better. Good luck! thumb.gif
