Surveillance is for peons like you and me, not the powerful people "in charge." It's used to protect the latter from the former.

They are running scared because they do not know how to Police without having all this information. How did they get convictions before without having the ability to look through your data? Real Police investigation that is how!!

right, Because its well known MS & NSA are best buds, no need to mention them as Microsoft isn't using marketing jargon to pretend as if they are protecting us from them.

If it comes with a search warrant, why not, I guess.

People are being silly for ever believing that information could be private on the Internet though. As a 14 year old kid, it made sense to me that the government could (and probably is) easily able to monitor everything that happens on my web browser.

I don't have a smart-phone nor do I think I'll ever get one. I don't need to be hooked up to the internet all the time. I get perverse pleasure in telling people who ask me if I got an e-mail "I don't know, didn't check my emails today".

They're protecting us from the terrorists... where "us" = the elites and "the terrorists" = us.

I wonder if these guys practice that poker face look in the mirror, I swear they all have the same expression for happy/sad/angry. No way that's natural. Dude has been at it for so long that his face developed creases to complete the look.

Atleast we know that Apple and Google care to protect their consumers from unwelcome eyes.

The world is no longer about just leg work.
In the past online crimes, pre-prevension was less of an issue.
Today cyber crimes, having to prevent terror before it happens where the setups and meetings are done online instead of some shabby warehouse, money laundry done online, information gathering and hacking done online instead of "this is a robbery! everyone put your hands up!" kind of thing, are thousands times harder to predict or police. There is no leg work, there is no DNA to test, there is no "oh we found a clue, lets follow it!" kind of CSI (where what you see on TV is 99% BS).

So information, online information, is too critical.
Problem is that the government while in the past needed a judge to allow entering and gathering evidence, now want free access without any consequences.
