[itmedia.co.jp] Another Gaming Headset From audio-technica - Page 3

The M50X and below probably aren't great for gaming due to their very small sound stage and recessed mids.

i wouldn't say the m50x has recessed mids, just not overly forward.

the number #1 thing i look for in headphones is detail and secondly accurate soundstage.

there is a difference between accurate and large soundstage though. to me the k701 sounds inaccurate and exaggerated though it is a large soundstage.

haven't heard the ad700 though.

M50x don't have small soundstage. It's very wide, even wider than M50, but don't have nice depth perception
not recessed, as perfectblade said
I prefer Takstar Pro80 than M50 at every sounds aspect. The only downside is not portable as M50x
Compared to beyerydynamic COP, I prefer M50x, I don't want to join the dark side :D

AD700X/A700X + FiiO E10K + antlion modmic, cheaper than ADG-1/AG-1 :D

Sure, but that also leaves you with a lesser mic, inferior aesthetics (I'm talking about the mic sticking out the side awkwardly with its own cable, not the cans themselves, that would of course be subjective), and requires your own effort and knowledge.

No one buys headsets over separate headphones + mic for cost saving or performance reasons. It is all about the convenience and peace of mind factors (not saying I agree with that, just that is why people buy headsets).

I don't recall ever stating otherwise in regards to price, yet it is something a number of people are probably willing to pay just a bit more for the convenience. Just look at Sennheiser's G4ME headsets, which seem to just be rebranded and packaged PC350/360 headsets yet seem popular enough. As for the Antlion Modmic, since I'm Canadian, once you factor in shipping plus conversion fees ($61.97 USD for a shipped ModMic becomes $69.89 CAD according to XE's Universal Currency Converter) just headphones and a mic are within $10 of the NCIX.ca price for the ADG1's ($279.99 CAD for headset vs $199.99 CAD for headphones plus the $69.89 CAD which is $269.88 CAD). I don't know about you, but that $10 CAD difference for the convenience of a single cable, better aesthetics, a microphone on the side I prefer (left, as opposed to right which is how the ModMic appears to be mounted on their site). Audio Technica also states exactly what kind of microphone you get (condenser), and by it's design would have noise-cancelling properties built in. Also, if one is a console gamer the ATH-ADG1/AG1 will work with PS4 and XBoxOne wihout any qualifiers like "it might sound weird at times with PS4" which might as well state "doesn't work properly with consoles." On top of all of this, a USB DAC is included which would provide sufficient for non-audiophile (aka average person) use. Oh, and if I were feeling crazy I could use them with my phone too.

Even if you don't factor in the shipping costs for the ModMic (despite the fact the ADG1's usually don't have shipping costs attached at a number of places), it's still only a $25 CAD difference at most for a solution that looks like it belongs as is (instead of the modmic, which clearly looks like an add-on), works with consoles, utilizes a single cable, and has interesting aesthetics.

Or, basically what @Zero4549 said.

I've only seen 2 headphones that aesthetically look good, and that is the Sennheiser hd700 and the beats executive. These look sort of mid range to me.

Well, Im guessing these new headsets are based of the M50 drivers....they look very similar. I own the M50 coiled version and I like them for music but for gaming....nope. I had the Fidelio X1 which i got for 150 bucks this past January and it blows the M50 away. I also Own the Sennheiser PC350 Special Edition which im currently using for Racing Games like GT6, F1 or anything else where soundstage doesnt matter much, plus i like how its more convenient for late night runs in which it wont bother my roomate or other people hearing him snore through my mic lol.

Ill be getting the Fidelio X2 later on when price drops since it has some valuable upgrades and since i sold my X1s already, that money will might as well go towards some X2 smile.gif

What really is catching my eye is that there are 2 options for the audio technica headphones....an open back and a close back. Now Im very interested in those open back because from what i recall, M30, m40, m50 are all closed back but with different drivers and sound signature varies a bit with each, being m50 is the better from them all.

Maybe they are not based on the M50 drivers but maybe the M40 drivers but having an open back headset will reduce bass easily but may be more controllable bass and still deep and punchy, just not as much as when its closed.

I might have to get a pair later on if the price is right at around 150 bucks. Could be a good present for my bro since he owns turtlecrap headset. These may be a great start into the audiophile world.

God, why did I have to join Head-Fi lol

My wallet is hurting as it is and Im also on the verge of purchasing either a Q701 or K712 lol

i would definitely get these over the k701. the k701 has too much of a v-shaped curve (too much treble, too much bass). they do have a massive soundstage but it sounds artificial to me and not really accurate. i would take the m50 or hd600 over it, but m50 is definitely better for gaming due to have more pronounced highs and details imo.

also closed vs open headphones for gaming is up for debate. but i think closed can be better as you can potentially hear more detail in a loud house. they tend to have smaller soundstages but i'd say accurate soundstage is more important than just large. though there are few particular phones that get recommended over and for this purpose for a reason

I have ATH-M50's for music. For gaming I use Senn HD-280 Pro's with a Zalman Clip-on Mic. It's really all you need for gaming, and the cans and mic cost me about $90 combined. The HD-280's are VERY durable by the way, you can throw them around all day long and.... nothing! thumb.gif
