Hello guys,

Let me share you my story with microsoft when upgrading from 7 to 8:

There was a promotion 2 years ago, 20$ if you had a laptop with win7 that you bought some months before win8 launch.

OK cool so 20$ for an upgrade, worth to try right?

They gave me a promotional code, put it in an upgrade assistant that asked me to pay 20$ and then upgrade the computer to 8.
As you may know, win8 was bad at launch and I seriously couldn't get used to it so I went back to 7. Now that 8.1 is out, I wanted to try it back but no product key was given via e-mail...
I called them asking for it, but they couldn't find it. I even have the receipt number.
First time, a lady failed to find anything and flushed me. Second time a guy told me that the promotion was good for only ONE upgrade to win8. I asked him that if my computer had a problem and need a fresh windows install how was I supposed to reinstall windows 8? He said that I couldn't, that the promotion was for one and only one upgrade?!

That doesn't make any sense really! Now windows 8 is super duper expensive like 120$. I wished to get it for a free win10 upgrade.

Was this through phone or chat?

MS support is sometimes hit or miss. Some folks you talk to are quite competent while others are not.

2 lengthy chat sessions and 3 phone calls in total. For 100+$ it was worth trying. Luckily I didn't believe the crap the guy told me on the phone (2nd call). It is astounding that they were all given the very same receipt number and date of transaction but failed to find it. The last phone call was only 3 minutes long! I wasted at least 1 hour in total!

French is my native language, I have to give that to them but chat session were not successful too. I had to insist to give them the receipt number (3 of them refused [said it was not needed] to take it lol!)
