well they have to beat Sandy bridge IPC by 50% if they want to beat Intel.

Haswell is on average 15-30% quicker on the same clock. by the time Zen is out, Intel is already on skylake which might be another 10-15% after than Haswell.

Jim Keller has been there two years already, and I would presume that Zen has been in development since he got there, since this is what he was hired to do. If AMD funds the R&D correctly, which they have been unwilling and/or unable to do with every product since the K8, they should be able to come up with a competitive design in four years.

One thing that I think will benefit them is the work they've had to do to get power consumption down on the 15h design. They've been working with an inefficient uarch and having to work with fabs that were two nodes behind Intel. But they've done a good job of getting the TDP's down on all of their products, even the 15h-based designs. If they can apply the lessons learned to Zen, coupled with the fact that the Asian foundries are starting to roll out more competitive fabs, they've got a chance to compete in every segment of the market.

It would take a minor miracle for Amd to catch Intel. The current lead with Intel's R&D budget is practically insurmountable.

I think Amd will do well to produce an architecture that can compete with Intel on a value level. Right now their cpus and apus consume so much power that it's almost as much of a deterrent as the performance hit. If they can improve on both of those significantly, I'll be happy.

New Fusion Socket (2016) -> Excavator+/Zen

Zen will be using 2nd Generation AMD Cluster-based Multithreading, and 1st Generation AMD Simultaneous Multithreading. It will be aimed mostly at scalar performance, x87-like workloads are the main focus. There is no discrete floating point unit. The integer core is the floating point unit core, and there will be a unified Integer/Floating Point register file, and or stack cache.

Excavator and Excavator+ will just be increasing performance. By higher frequencies, or more IPC from a bigger, more streamlined FPU. Excavator will setup AMD's new platforms with really low ASP, APUs and CPUs.

16 core XV/XV+ for $299 for example or a 4c/8cu replacement for A10-7850K for $99. Zen will higher the ASP by several magnitudes, but the increase will be worth it through the performance jump.

30%? I doubt it.

When normalized for frequency the Haswell scores about 12% higher at the same frequency as Sandy in both tests. Even if Skylake was 10% better per herz it'd only be around 23% better than Sandy.

I think if AMD brought out a cheap, overclockable CPU that could beat Intel (not so worried about power usage) then they'd be golden again. I'd like to remind the AMD engineers of the K6-II, the CPU that put AMD on the map in the first place; because they need another CPU generation like that one to show all their customers that AMD CPUs can be the gamer's choice. Hopefully Zen will be something similar. biggrin.gif

Edit: I see Zen is about server architecture, like the Athlon64 was. My point still stands, as AMD need a way to corner the performance:price sweetspot in people's hearts and minds in order to be successful once again.
