Trying out an SSD for the first time. Samsung 840 Pro 128Gb, my thoughts

I picked up one of these on sale at Bestbuy yesterday, and before I even opened it, buyers remorse has already set it.
After I got home I realised that the sequential write speed tops out at 390 MB/s, yet I only have a SATA II interface which means it will only reach 300 MB/s maximum anyway.

IOPS is another concern; The 840 pro has 97,000/90,000 IOPS. Does the SATA II interface affect the IOPS, or just the read/write speeds?

However if I plan to upgrade soon I will realize the full potential of this drive. Yet it is a good 200 MB/s slower than the 256Gb variant which I can get for $150 since Bestbuy in their infinite wisdom does not carry the 256Gb model.

So in the end I have paid about $104 for the 128 gig version which is slower, more $ per Gb, and smaller in size than the 256 model which I can get tax-free and with free shipping.

You've already convinced yourself it needs returning.

My rule of thumb: You DON'T want a part in your computer that leaves you with a sour taste/remorse. Take it back.

BUT, next time, be careful to do your "homeworks" before you buy, and read a lot of reviews...then buy a product you are confident to live confortably with....

Thank you, your replies have convinced me that it was not a wise buy for the long run.

Sequentials aren't the end all, if this is an upgrade from a HDD it will definitely be noticeable.

I do agree you should return the 840 Pro; there are cheaper drives you can buy and you won't be able to tell the difference between the ~$65 and the $104 Samsung 840 Pro. If you want a ssd now look at the OCZ Arc 100, if you can wait a bit then the 850 Evo could be released and should have shook pricing up a bit. If your looking at 256GB look at the MX100, its $114.

Keep it. Even though you have sata3gbit, its still gonna be MASSIVE improvement compared to HDDs. Sequential numbers mean jerk so do IOPS to some extent. Atleast for most users anyway. thumb.gif

I decided to try it out just to see if it's worth the upgrade to a 256 and all I can say is this...thing...is...fast. TOO fast. ,A fresh installation of Windows boots in about 5 seconds and was making me think that Windows was going into hibernation mode instead of shutting down, but after digging through the control panel settings, hibernation is off. My eyes are deceiving me.
